Duo v2 setup
Hi all,
New to NASes and networking generally, a first-time Netgear customer and enthusiastic amateur. I purchased the NAS following a recommendation from my firm's IT manager. I intend to use it as a backup for photographs, to allow me to watch movies and TV without having my main PC on and to allow me to download torrents.
But I'm looking for help setting my ReadyNAS Duo v2 up properly. I bought it about a week ago in Sydney and have since discovered it's the ARM version, it has the latest firmware. I have added a 3TB hard disk and so far the hardware seems to be fine.
The NAS is wired directly to my router, an iiNet Belkin BOB device, a separate cable runs from my router to my DLNA Samsung TV. I have managed to fix its local IP to 10.1.1.3. But no matter what I do I can't seem to set-up remote access on WAN. I can access it fine via my LAN and wifi (on laptop, ipad3 and Android smartphone), but can't seem to thread the connection through my router to allow me to login outside the LAN.
Am i right in thinking that the v2 does not support remote access except through the ReadyNAS remote program, and also does not support webDAV???
I have managed to map a network drive to my media share and generally it works, i can watch my media on my TV with the main computer turned off, but after restarting it after turning it off overnight (it's in my baby's room) it has difficulty picking up the network drive, with the network connection dropping in and out. Is there a way to fix this?
Also, strangely the media share I have set up is listed in windows explorer with a different IP address to my computer's main IP address, is that right?
I've got to say I wish Netgear included more information in the box. I spent most of Saturday trying to figure out how to get to the 'Front View' display, it was only after hours of googling that I discovered the dashboard is the ARM's version of Front View. Plus most of their 'how-tos' are for the older versions that use Front View.
Finally, I downloaded the readyNAS extras pack that contains Python, SABnzbd, Sickbeard and CouchPotato, and have installed these as add-ons, BUT after setting it up, CouchPotato now won't let me login and now I have no idea how to remove it - any advice welcome.
I downloaded Putty to try and access the NAS and remove CP but because of aforementioned IP problems, couldn't login. This is really frustrating, I want to be able to make the most of, what seems like a great, device. Can anyone help iron out these niggles, I'm tempted to send this back to the shop and get a Synology DS212j instead.
Thanks, Chris

- sealaxAspirantAnyone got any advice on these niggles???
- Marto731AspirantTo Sealax,
For remote access, can you set up a firewall rule on your router, to point to
NAS LAN IP. I can't specify port #, perhaps 443.
Are you actually talking about the ReadyNAS remote service?
Re your network connection dropping, is the address 10.1.1.3 a static IP?
I cannot support you on Add-on's as they are community addon's. But are you sure they
are available for NAS ARM Duo v2? I thought they were just available for older Sparc Duo v1,
but I'm happy to be corrected.
Regards Marto - sealaxAspirantHi Marto, I've been away for the holidays so am going to attempt to set my NAS up again tomorrow morning.
10.1.1.3 was the locally assigned IP given to the ReadyNAS by my router. I was then able to fix this local address via an option in my router. I thought this would help avoid the problem of the router dynamically assigning different IP addresses.
I had read that port 443 was the one to open but it didn't seem to work.
With regards to the add-ons I downloaded the ARM version of the files.
I will try and set this up tomorrow and let you know how I go. - sealaxAspirantHI all,
OK. I setup my ReadyNas Duo v2 again this morning, went through the set-up process, set-up shares etc and renamed it as 'nas-home1', everything fine. I have copied files to it, managed to access it from within my Lan (on ipad and Android phone), set up Transmission, mapped network drives etc.
For the record it's IP address is fixed at 10.1.1.3 by my router.
Just to finish off my testing I thought I would restart it - what a mistake!
Raidar detects my NAS but does not see 'nas-home1' instead it sees 'nas-BE-A0-F0' on the same IP address, and says 'click to set-up' - but I already did that!!!!
There is no option to 'browse' the device. I have hit 'rescan' and 'locate' in Raidar and the LEDs of my device flash up!
What's happened to 'nas-home1'??? Does anyone have any advice, guidance??? I'm extremely reluctant to go through the set-up process again as I have spent most of the day copying files across to the readyNAS.
PLEASE HELP! :-( - sealaxAspirantanyone???
- sealaxAspirantFFS - now the NAS is showing as being set-up with the 'nas-BE-A0-F0' host name, i just browsed into it and and everything I copied onto it earlier has gone! WTF is going on???
- sealaxAspirantOK, I have now resorted to the paperclip option and tried a default factory reset. This went through the motions, i eventually got the chance to enter set-up in raidar I went through set-up using a new host name, restarted to see if the problem had been fixed, and nope I'm back to square one, once again host name is displaying as 'nas-BE-A0-F0'!
The new host name is not showing and it is again asking me to set-up the device again!
I'm really getting frustrated with this. I only bought the readynas on the recommendation of a friend and was going to get a synology or qnap instead, looks like that's what i'm going to have to do!
If anyone has any advice on what this could be and how to fix it, I'd love to hear it. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDid you by any chance do a secure erase when you did a factory default? If so, that might explain this problem. Your disks are most likely locked. Each boot since the disks are locked the NAS would think the disks are blank and start a factory default.
- sealaxAspiranthi mdgm, if i did a secure erase it was not intentional!
Out of frustration I did hit the erase option in the setup wizard when i was last trying to set this up (a couple of weeks ago). The erase started but in the end I had to shut the NAS down without letting it finish. There was no option or chance to start a 'secure erase' though.
I had also tried the factory reset option previously is there a chance this could have led to the secure erase?
Basically it seems to be in some kind of loop, in that every time i restart it asks me to set the device up and it wipes whatever is on the disk.
How do I go about unlocking the disks??? I would have thought the factory default did that? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe erase option would be the secure erase. Not letting this complete would be the cause of this issue.
You have three options:
1. Do a secure erase again and this time let it complete
2. Seek help e.g. from L3 support (via a tech support case) to fix this issue. It's a very easy issue to fix. Should only take a tech a few minutes or so to unlock the drives once remotely logged into your unit.
3. Try to unlock the drives yourself: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=380555#p380555
