External USB ID (ie. USB_HDD_1) name keeps changing

As the subject title describes, my external usb drive ID doesn't stay the same. It changes every now and then from USB_HDD_1 to 2 and so on. I have two external USB drives, currently they have progressed to USB_HDD_4 and USB_HDD_5.

I have just updated to 6.4.1 on my RN312 box. It was happening when I was first on 6.2.2 firmware. Thing is when it changes names your backup jobs don't work cause it's looking for the wrong ID.

What's causing this?

How do I reset the ID?

Cheers.

  • You can reset the name if you have ssh access.

    Remove usb disc from unit

login to readynas via putty ,  user = root - your admin password

    goto /etc/frontview/usb

edit the file "usb-map" using editor of choice  remove/clear all entries

    save file

plug usb disk back in and it should be back to usb_hdd_1

    Hi teo2710,

Were the drives safely removed (there's an icon in the admin page) before you unplugged them? Also, connect them to a PC and run windows error-checking tool.

    Kind regards,

Many thanks for showing me how to reset it back to USB_HDD_1 and USB_HDD_2 respectively.

I had been ejecting it the proper way via the admin page. Don't know why it has shifted to numbers 4 and 5 over time.

Might have to keep an eye on it from now on.

Thanks for the solution, but really, NETGEAR?  You can make this doable in the interface?

There isn't a UI option to clear the list of USB disks.
