Folder copied from Mac won't open on PC

Having what might be a very simple issue here.

I have a folder on my Mac that I am trying to store on my ReadyNas Duo (RND2000). I have tried copying it to various folders using a direct to server, CIFS and AFP connections from my Mac to the ReadyNas. No matter how I transfer the files or how I set permissions on the Mac before transfer, the PC will not open the video files on the ReadyNas. Pictures are fine, but I'm denied access to the videos. Other files are fine, but this folder contains photos and videos from an old iPhone I backed up. Once it's copied onto the ReadyNas, my Mac opens the files fine, but I get the following error:

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

Hopefully there's some basic setting I've overlooked somewhere either on my Mac or on FrontView that will solve this issue. I've already tried various combinations on FrontView on both the CIFS and AFP share to see if that makes a difference, but to no avail.

Any help is appreciated, and apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere, but it didn't turn up in my searches.

  • I sort of figured it out. If I log in as a user and copy a file from Mac to ReadyNas and then log in as the same user on my PC, I can access the video file. I don't see any way to reset all the permissions on the shares I've set up. Will have to figure out how to do that and just forget about internal security for the moment. Considering just switching completely to Mac to not have to deal with these issues as spending hours to figure these sorts of dilemmas detracts from actual work.

    Are you using a v2 (with 5.x.x firmware) or a v1 (with 4.1.x firmware)?

You can reset all the permissions in a folder through the "advanced options" tab in Frontview. (go the share listing page, select CIFS and then the "advanced options" tab on the upper right).

You'll see a checkbox with text saying "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems."

Set the permissions, check the box, and click apply at the bottom. The checkbox will immediately clear, and you will get a pop-up window when the action completes.
