Freecom SilverStore to RN104
I have a Freecom SilverStore with 2 x 3TB WD harddisks configured to RAID 1. I just bought an RN104 with 2 x 3 TB WD because of lack of storage space on the Freecom. I need to migrate the Freecom to the RN104. Here are my thoughts:
1. Connect one of the two existing 3 TB WD disks to my linux server.
2. Configure the RN104 RAID 5 with the three remaining 3TB WD disks (6 TB).
3. Copy the content from the linux server to the RN104.
4. Clear the last 3 TB WD en place it in the RN104 (9 TB).
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Alexander

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt might be just as fast to copy the files over your network with nfs. Write speeds to the RN104 are about 50 MB/s on a gigabit network. Copying first to the hard drive, and then again to the RN104 seems unlikely to be faster.
Also, step (4) should be unformatting the 3 TB drive. Though you can do that after you hot-insert it into the RN104. - K3N8Aspirant
That it exactly what I mean. The data is already on the 3TB WD disk. I transfer the data using NFS to the RN104 over a gigabit network.StephenB wrote: It might be just as fast to copy the files over your network with nfs. I don't understand. The manual clearly states that you have to reformat used drives before inserting it to the RN104.StephenB wrote: Also, step (4) should be unformatting the 3 TB drive. The purpose of the format checks is to protect you from data loss (because many people presume that their data will be preserved when they add the drive to the NAS).
So if you want to do anything ahead of time, the best thing to do is zero the drives, so they have no format at all.
If you don't do that, you can still add the drive to your NAS, but there will probably be a prompt to confirm. - K3N8AspirantThat's it. I just finished the operation in full. The RN104 is setup and all the data is transfered. It is currently making backups. That will take some time. The four steps worked out fine! Thanks to everybody who helped!
