hdd turn off?
Hello,
I just purchased a readynas 102 system with 2T western digitall HDD.since I am wondering if I should leave the system all the time ON .
What happens if it is ON and none is accessing the system? Are the HDDs goes to any kind of sleep mode? Are the HDDs revving all the time?should I take care to turn it off when we are not using it?
Can someone please clear this?
We are a small business with all our work stored to this nas and we are concern about how to minimize damage possibilities.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks
Achilles

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserRight now the drives do not spin down. Some posts from Netgear suggest that it is in their plans.
The best way to prevent damage is to connect up a UPS to the NAS (one of the models that has a USB interface that the RN102 can monitor). Also, you should put a backup strategy in place. - maxblackAspirant

StephenB said it and it can't be emphasized strongly enough--you MUST (not just "should") backup your NAS regularly, lest your business fail along with the NAS. You also need a UPS for sure, so you need still to spend another $200-300 at least which will be cheap insurance against a hardware failure.
You might consider putting the NAS on a schedule to turn-off at night, but IMO that is not practical given someone might want to work after hours.
