High smbd CPU usage

We've just gone live with a RN316 in a branch office, providing file storage for a small office.

We're somewhat surprised to see the high CPU usage we're getting when only around 6 users may be simultaneously accessing the ReadyNAS.

These 2 graphs do appear to show CPU usage following network throughput pretty closely, but the network throughput isn't really very high.

This is a worse case period, as seen in htop:

Are we expecting too much from our little ReadyNAS?

  • A bit more information...

We're using ReadyNAS OS 6.6.1, and most of the clients are old Macs, running 10.4 upwards.

We've not enabled AFP because we're reluctant to use a protocol which should be going the way of the dodo...

It would be interesting to see if AFP (presumably Netatalk?) performs any better though.

      Hi johnb_pa,

Kindly try enabling AFP then observe. If it does the same thing, I suggest you call support. If its brand new, it should still be within the 90-day support.

We've not had a chance to test AFP access yet, but will do.

Sadly what we've had back from the users is that the ReadyNAS is performing much worse than the 10 year old Windows server which the NAS is replacing. :(
