How long should backing up to USB take?
I'm a first-time backer upper, so if anyone can help me out, it'd be much appreciated.
I have the NV+2 and I'm backing up 1.5TB from the NAS to an external USB3 2TB drive plugged directly into the rear NAS USB port. I began the backup 72 hours ago. The USB drive shows 280GBs full and I can mount/read some of the files, so it does appear to be working properly, just slowly.
How long should a backup of this size with my configuration take, in others' experiences? I do have some rather large files in the backup (150GB+ iPhoto libraries). The USB drive was cleanly erased and formatted EXT3. I neglected to enable Fast USB disk writes prior to starting the backup.
Secondly, I work from this NAS constantly, and files have minimally changed during the course of this backup—saving, copying and whatnot. What effect does that have on such a lengthy backup? The NAS's contents will be slightly different at the end of the backup than from the beginning. Does this all just work out okay? Will subsequent incremental backups pickup what's changed and keep it all tidy?
Thanks in advance! Documentation on these issues is tough to come by, and I've checked the forums and applicable Netgear manuals to no avail.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFast USB writes would help a lot. This option is on the v1 only
I'd recommend changing the backup job properties to use Rsync for the incremental backups (you can see instructions e.g. on my website).
Are you sure you have the v2? What version of RAIDiator is on the NAS? Is your NAS silver (v1) or charcoal (v2) in colour? - jonsengeAspirantLooks like I do have the V1, sorry about that. I'm on RAIDiator 4.1.8.
- maxblackAspirantjonsenge I did as you some time back, and it took I think fully four (4) days to do the initial backup! I was shocked, but apparently the backup task is a low(er) priority for the NV+ and it just is slow. Subsequent to the initial backup, I am doing RSYNC updates on a weekly basis and sometimes that takes a couple hours, most times it's an hour or less, which is completely acceptable to me.
My USB drive is a 2TB also, but USB2 and formatted EXT2. I have Fast USB Writes set on now; can't recall if I had when I did the initial backup.
I think you'll do best to expect it's gonna take a few days, and then set-up RSYNC to backup only changes. Here's a link to my own experience, and there's another link in there that points-to the instructions I found (from mdgm himself I believe) that helped me a lot:

This reminds me I originally tried making my backup to and NTFS-formatted drive, which I did later use Puppy Linux to re-do to EXT2. - andefeldtAspirantI recently backed up my 1.65 TB to a USB drive (first backup). Used rsync and fast USB writes. It still took me around a week(!) to finish.
I then did a factory reset om order for me to expand my NAS capacity (changed raid type). I then assumed that a restore from my USB drive would require a week again. I restored using cp (copyright command) and only 2,5 days eas needed. A bit odd. - jonsengeAspirantThanks, everyone. This is reassuring and the mdgm's tips will be really helpful in setting up the rsync. I've been calculating the data transfer rate by watching how full the destination drive is getting. It's cruising around 3.5-4 GB/hour, which sounds like it's in the ballpark for this config.
Will report back once it's finished.
