How to remove the Readynas Pro CPUfan

Hello,

I asked if it was possible to remove the HDD from a broken Readynas Ultra6 and transfer it to a new Readynas.
I was unable to get a used Readynas, but finally was able to get a used Readynas Pro, so I tried it and it worked.

However, there is a new problem.

The CPU fan of this used Readynas Pro is unusually noisy.
I want to replace the CPU fan with a new one, but I don't know how to remove the fan from the heatsink.

I observed the CPU heatsink.
It seems that the fan and heatsink are held together by a U-shaped plastic hook. Can I lift up this plastic and remove the fan?

I am worried that the hooks might break if I do it forcefully.

  • I don't know what "U-shaped plastic hook" you refer to.  Normally, there are four small clips that hold the base of the fan to the rest of the heat sink.  You don't remove the entire heat sink unless you are replacing/upgrading the CPU.  You do need to pry them back ever so slightly to remove the fan.  But use care, as they can get brittle with age.

      Dear Mr. Sandshark.

       Thank you for your response.
I think the U-shaped plastic hook is probably the same as what Mr. Sandshark is talking about.
These are 4 plastic parts that hold the fan to the heatsink.

You are saying that I can lift the hooked part here up a little and take out the fan?

As you say, I'm worried about deterioration over time, but I'll give it a try anyway.

      The double post was unintended.
      My apologies.

        Dear StephenB.

         Thanks for the reply.

Regarding the photo, I will try to see if I can get it right.
