I revived my ReadyNAS NV+ v1 after 2 years, now what?

My PSU for my ReadyNAS NV+ died about 2+ years ago and due to "life" happening I haven't gotten around to getting a new PSU and bringing it back to life. Right now it has all my FLAC music files on it and I plan on using streaming those to my various apple and non-apple products (Apple TV, A7, PS3 etc) as well as getting back on track with ripping my old DVDs into a movie library. I have two questions:

1. What things do I need to do to my NAS to get it up to speed with all that happened in the last few years (i.e. fan speed, firmware, software, settings) that are stable and compatible with my NV+ v1?
2. What new add-ons etc are out there for my NAS that will help continue streaming a media server for apple (primarily my music management) and the PS3 (primarily my movie management).

Thanks in advance!

  • Do you know when your unit was last factory defaulted?
There was a file system block size change when firmware hit 4.x.x. You should be on an early version of this but it's important to know if the unit has been factory defaulted on 4.x.x.

The firmware that you need is 4.1.13:

There haven't been any major changes in the last 2 years as the nv+ is an old readynas unit and the firmware updates really only involve bug fixes.

As for your second questions, I don't stream to those devices but there is a lot on the forums about them.

You should have a backup of the data - re-ripping a lot of music if you lose data would be very time consuming.

Ideally sort out a backup before you upgrade firmware.
  • You might want to look at newer units, and even then your requirements might need a lot more effort, i.e. NV+ v1 will not stream to an apple device (iPod/iPhone/AirPlay), but it will stream DLNA and it also has an iTunes server to stream to a PC/MAC. I have a Duo v1 which I use for just storage, it works fine, but streaming is not a strength of that unit. It's also much slower than newer units, so file transfers take a lot longer. Fine for small files, big files will keep you waiting a while. It all comes down to what you really want to get out of the it at the end of the day.

You can read the data from the disks in a PC - search these forums for clues.
  • I have never done a factory reset, but I was able to upgrade to 4.1.13 with no issues and it is just like new.

As far as streaming, I was hoping there was some added features or apps during this time, but as you note aks this is not a strength of the NV+. I do use it as an iTunes server on my PC then use that for airplay, so not direct but it works. I have heard from multiple folks (not just here on the forum) that my best bet is to back up frequently and start looking for a NAS that has more of these features.

    Thanks!

The big issue with all linux systems is that apple's home sharing feature is proprietary and has not been reverse engineered. That seriously cripples this functionality with all NAS, not just Netgear.

The v1 is fast enough for full HD playback, but not transcoding on the fly.
  • Some manufacturers of consumer equipment have licensed AirPlay so can play direct content from an iDevice.

Yes we want the reverse also, NAS to iDevice, but I wonder why this has not been made available for licensing. Looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer for the community... or use a decent app, of which Stephen and I have both commented on in other threads.

Yes. As far as I can see, all the various NAS manufacturers are in the same place as far as iDevice features goes.
