kmem_cache_alloc+5c Error on Boot, unable to access NAS
Since I cannot find my box in the autofill list above and there is zero filter capability (yea for Netgear!), here is the Model info straight from the back of my NAS:
Netgear Advanced Storage
Model No: RND-4D
Model Name: RN10400-100NAS
Original Firmware: V6.0.4 (recently updated to most current)
It currently has four 2TB Western Digital Red hard drives installleed. Purchased about 1.5 years ago, no issues setting it up, attached to network through CAT5 on a switch and static IP address. Drives are set up in a RAIDX NAS configuration.
About a week ago I noticed a message that I had hit 80% capacity on the drives and needed to clear some space. Shortly after seeing this mesage as I started to clean up space, I lost connection to the drive, power button was unresponsive and forced me to power down by unplugging device. On booting it back up I was able to access the drive through both Windows Explorer and its admin webpage. It gave me a notice that there was a new firmware version available so I decided to go ahead with that install now to see if it helped with the recent issue. After successfully installing it, a reboot was initiated without any indication of a problem.
After the reboot the NAS displayed a message that it was rebooting XX% and made it to 70% and stayed here, after an hour I decided to leave it running and went to bed. The next morning it was still sitting at 70% and I could not connect through RAIDar or the admin page so I tried power button again unsuccessfully and was forced to power it down by cord again. Plugging it back in it built up to 92% and then stopped. Ten hours later it was still sitting at that percentage so I again went through all of the tests to try to connect tot he box without success and again was forced to power down by unplugging the box. The next time I powered it up it booted through to 100% and allowed me access through the admin page where I was able to navigate within it but it stated that no drives were present and I was unable to access them through Windows Explorer. Initiatiating a reboot from within the admin page it is now displaying an error at boot up of kmem_cache_alloc+5c and I am unable to access files or system through any avenue.
Wanting to ensure this was not a drive issue, I have pulled all four drives out and run the WD Data Lifeguard tool through both the simple and extended analysis. All tests were passed for all four drives. Plugging them all back in the original order I am continuing to see this same error and unable to get the box to respond to any of my efforts.
I have searched this board and the broader internet and have been unable to find any previous issue that matches or resolves my issue. Any advice from the board?
Thank you to everyone who assisted me with this issue. The factory reset with a single drive was successful and since I had completed the full back up of the data I went ahead with the factory reset with all four drives inserted. The rebuild took about 2 days but once completed the drive was available and ready for use. I transferred the 3TB's back to the drive and have now been accessing it again as normal prior to this outage. I can also confirm that my default/base/factory set version was 6.5.1 so no extra effort needed there.
After this completely avoidable debacle, I cannot imagine every allowing another firmware update due to Netgear is using this as a way to suck you in and pay for support... :(
I will be setting this issue to resolved. Thank you again everyone!!!

What firmware are you running? Do you have snapshots enabled?
- JafloonterAspirantTo my knowledge I do not have snapshots enabled, only email alerts if a drive fails. I do not remember the exact certain but it was the most recent it offered, something like 6.2.3 maybe...

Current firmware is 6.5.1, so if you are running 6.2.x it is quite out of date.
Did you try booting up the system with the volume read only option? Page 24-25 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/RN_OS_6_Desktop_HW_UM_12Oct2015.pdf
- JafloonterAspirantThis now generates a new error stating sk_filter+28. Regarding the firmware version, I do not think it is out of date, as mentioned earlier I really have no idea what version I have but I keep it up to date and it had just asked me to install a new version which I did so it should be the most recent version as of two weeks ago when this first occurred.
- omicron_persei8LuminaryTo confirm if the issue is hardware or software, you can use a scratch disk:
1) shutdown the NAS
2) remove and label all your HDDs
3) insert a temporary HDD (it will be wiped)
4) perform a factory default via the boot menu
-> if the NAS boots ok, the other issue is software, not hardware
-> if the NAS doesn't boot ok, and you have the same issue, then you can consider the flash is corrupt. The flash may be considered as part of the hardware...
I didn't read all of your messages, but NETGEAR should have offered a Per Incident contract as well, which is most likely cheaper than a yearly contract.- JafloonterAspirant
I tried as recommended and booted up with a single drive and everything booted up fine. RAIDar is also reporting a healthy system and I was able to access the admin site to perform the setup steps with no issues. Based on your directions this clears the NAS of a hardware issue. Since I have already run full diagnostics on all four drives that hardware should also be ruled out.
Is my assumption right that the next step would be to reinsert my original four drives and perform a factory reset on them? All data is now backed up to another source so at this point nothing should be lost other than time for the rebuild and transfer time.

I'd try the factory reset next, (and if it is downrev, bring it up to 6.5.1 before reloading data).
