Locked files issue

Hi,
I have a ReadyNas 2100 with RAIDiator 4.2.22. Before finding out about this forum, I performed the apt-get update && apt-get upgrade with the default sources.list.
It apparently upgraded login, ncurses, perl (lib, base and modules), gpgv, libpam0g, passwrd, tzdata, libgnutls, libvolume, libcurl, libfreetype, libhtml-parser, libpng, libvorbis, ntpdate, smbclient (smbclient_2%3a3.5.16-netgear1_i386.deb), ssh. noflushd.
I then installed munin-node, which is working all right (just had to deactivate the python based plugin).

My Samba version is 3.5.16.
I have configured only one volume, on which there is one share, only accessible in CIFS. Opportunistic Locking is turned off.
Disk scrubbing is scheduled once a week.

I'm using Samba munin plugin to monitor the number of file locked and concurrent users, it just pulls out the info from smbstatus. In peak times, I have 40 samba users and 150 file locked.
Some users are complaining about file being locked, although they are the only one accessing it. See the error message here.
I'm not able to reproduce the error myself, it seems that some computers have more issues than others despite being the same configuration (windows 7, office 2010, symantec endpoint protection). Our servers are running Win 2k3.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Hi,

I was able to replicate the problem with Powerpoint, which tells me that it is more an access configuration issue.
When a user creates a new Powerpoint, saves it in a specific folder (for which he has read/write access), closes Powerpoint, and tries to open the file again, then it always is in Read Only.

We're using standard configuration for access right, what am I missing ?
  • apt-get upgrade is a bad idea, and probably ruined chances for help from Support. The Jedi also don't visit these forums anymore, so hopefully someone else on here can try and help you out.

Do you (connected as domain admin) ever see the issue?
  • Yes I do, same issue while connected as admin.

Nothing in the logs. It seems that we are able to fix the problem by forcing the folder rights to propagate to the child folders, from the admin account on windows.

If I want to revert to the stock firmware, do I have to move the data out of the NAS ?
  • Yes, though there is a method to reset the OS partition without moving data (risky). There are forum posts on that topic.
OS Re-install should restore most of the programs, I'd try that method first. http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... _boot_menu

I'd also be curious if downgrading to 4.2.19 firmware makes a difference.
  • I'm running Tape Backup so I have a copy of the data, but it would be too risky and too time taking to do a factory reset.
This is not a solution I can implement at the moment...
  • Solved it !

    No more Locked File issue.

In a Windows Explorer window, do the following:
    1. Right click on the Start Button.
    2. Click 'Open Windows Explorer'.
    3. At the top left click Organize > Layout
    4. Uncheck Details Pane and Preview Pane.
    5. In Control Panel > Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Scroll down the list to “Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items” and clear the checkbox and then click OK.
  • Hi,

    Has this problem been resolved.
We suffer from this on a regular basis on our
    Model: ReadyNAS NV+ v2
    Serial: 2V0324EN00160
    Firmware: RAIDiator 5.3.7
Using SMB sharing protocol with Windows 7 Pro machines

The only resolution at the moment is to rest the permissions from the Shares Administration screen.
This is not acceptable in a business environment!

Please provide a fix for this.
  • David,
did you get anything from anywhere to fix this in the end? I am only using in a home office context but I am experiencing the issues almost constantly. Same set up as you NAS version and for the main users the OS but I also have issues on an XP Pro machine.

To be honest I don't see it as acceptable in a home situation either. When almost every file that you put on there is locked, even one that you yourself just filed and then closed the application.
That means log in, reset and propagate permissions etc. every time for me, the wife and the kids. Nope.
