Losing Volume on Raid 0 #24221687
Hi
I have a strange issue with losing my volume after the first NAS restart after initial set-up. All 4 drives check out fine in Windows, memory test and disk checks have been done via the NAS and everything has come back ok. I can create single drive volumes in raid 0 (which I know is pointless), but when another dive is added so I have 2 or more drives, I lose the volume again.
Steps:
1) Set-up NAS as raid 0 for 1xdrive to test.
2) Verify Volume is fine.
3) Restart NAS, volume is still fine.
4) Shut down and install second disk, and reset-up NAS again as raid 0
5) Verify Volume is fine.
6) Restart NAS, Volume is now gone, but everything still starts up as normal.
Logs simply state: That the shares cannot be accessed. The drives have been in this NAS for over a year, so it's not a new installation.
Any help is appreciated, it’s driving me mad.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDid you do a factory reset with secure erase? If so, did you interrupt it?
- rdorianAspirantHi
I've tried a secure erase a few days ago, and have done around 10 factory resets (which is what I'm doing when adding disks for testing) since. None have been interrupted.
In saying that I did have to cut power to that NAS a few days ago, but unless that has a detrimental effect at the OS level, I can't see that affecting anything since many factory resets have been done since then. Oh and an OS re-install via the boot menu has also been done.
The log errorrs are:
The paths for the shares listed below could not be found. Typically, this occurs when the ReadyNAS is unable to access the data volume.
Volume scan failed to run properly.
And the LCD on the NAS states "No data volume" - vandermerweMasterJust clarifying at step 4-5 you are ending up with a raid 0 volume spanning 2 disks and you are definitely using flexraid?
What are you aiming to achieve in terms of the volume or volumes you want? Raid 0 spanning more than one disk is even more pointless than individual disk volumes, which are ok as long as you have a robust backup arrangement.
Have you checked the disks using vendor tools?
What disks are they?
What firmware? - rdorianAspirantHi
To answer your points in order.
1) Yes, its flex raid (second option down and raid 0 selected from the dropdown). I’m testing with 2 disks just now but have 4 for this NAS. Doesn't matter what drives, and in what drive bays, when I add more than 1 disk, the first restart loses the volume. Prior to that restart I can install apps, see the full volume, access and copy to the volume without issue.
2) Yes raid 0 is pointless for backup on a single NAS, but I'm mirroring the NAS to a dedicated backup NAS. This is actually the backup NAS we are discussing, so the main NAS is currently at risk.
3) Running various detailed disk checks the moment. I'll take a while though...16TB. Quick checks in windows showed everything as fine, just a few reallocated sectors on one disk. The NAS passed all the disks when is full disk test was run by the NAS.
4) 2x Seagate and 2x Hitachi on the backup NAS, which is the one under discussion. These disks are about a year old. The problem seems to have just started when I did a factory reset. The main NAS runs WD red drives; both NAS are 16TB, 4 x 4TB.
5) Latest ARM 5.3.11 is installed on both NV+V2.
I've been using ReadyNAS in their various forms for around 8 years now, and this is the first time I've run into anything like this. Any idea’s a greatly appreciated, as I’m at a loss. I’m not doing anything that I haven’t done a dozen times before. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou might want to contact support, as the NV+ v2 should still be under warranty.
- rdorianAspirantHi
I've submitted a request to Netgear support. I'll post back anything that comes up, 'cause it might help someone in the future. In the mean time, if anyone else has any ideas that would be great.
Thanks. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you download your logs and attach the zip file to your case?
- rdorianAspirantI have added the logs from a previous attempt to the support ticket. I'll attach updated logs when the drives are freed up and back in the NAS. They are currently connected to the PC getting a surface scan. Thanks.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou might also wish to run the memory test boot option on the NAS whilst you are running the surface scan on the disks.
- rdorianAspirantJust to cover where I am at the moment and to answer StephenB and mdgm's post.
mdgm, I've performed a memory test and no fault was found...unfortunately....it would have made things simpler.
For StephenB, Netgear are currently suggesting that I purchase a support contact as software is only supported under 90 days, so it doesn't matter as it's only the hardware covered under the full warranty. This is a rhetorical question as I know that anyone in the know can't honestly answer it, but I just wanted to get a frustration across. How can you have a product with multi-year warranty but the proprietary software that it relies on only be 90 days. So on the 91st day the software gets messed up as part of an upgrade, and that's your NAS useless.
As I’ve previously covered I had 4x4TB drives in a NV+V2, and have done for over a year. Decided to do a fresh backup, so reset the NAS (which is my backup NAS) to factory default. I had 16TB of storage, could access and write to it. But restarting the NAS loses the volumes every time.
I’ve been attempting to test the drives individually, but am having strange results:
3 out of the 4 drives just refuse to be recognised on Windows or Linux (windows stated I/O device error in disk manager why initialising disk), and formatting fails straight away when attempting to format through various other tools. Disk checks are fine for some tools that can see the drives; presumably this discrepancy is due to windows recognition. I’ve also tested each drive individually in the NAS and all are recognised, all install, can be written to etc, but upon restart the RAIDar want to set-up again. Once again on 3 out of 4 drives.
I’ve done an erase drives from the boot menu of the NAS with no difference. Am I missing something, is there a proprietary security on the dives once in the nas? Surly this is not a simultaneous failure of 3 drives, all of which report SMART as fine. More likely that the NAS has done something to the drives, than 3 to “fail” at once?
Any further advice appreciated, as I'm guessing that the support contact would no doubt cost more that the NAS and drives combined, so I'm guessing will not be an option for me.
