Most efficient way to move files between shares
I have a large quantity of media on my ReadyNAS NV+ which I want to move from share A to share B.
Using my PC to do this is very tedious (it's estimating nearly 20hrs to move about 200gb) - am I right in thinking that this is copying it down to my PC and then back up to the new location?
Is there a quicker way of doing this? ie doing the file transactions 'on' the NAS itself? Is this something that can be done through SSH, and if so, is there a noobie guide on this?
Thanks for the help!

- you can change the drive letter yes.
you can not use \C\IN.THE.SHIRES.FOLDER because that is a subfolder of C and not a share itself.
connecting to C will show all shares and files in the /C volume though. - ivanekAspirant

You would create create a new session with the following information:
Host name: IP address of NAS
Port number: 22
User name: root
Password: your admin password (default is/was 'netgear1')
File protocol: SFTP
Thanks a lot. Which one of Add-ons do you recommend for this purpose? EnableRootSSH orToggleSSH?
Do you think thhis Security Alert: "Opening up your NAS to SSH with password authentication on a public network is a bad idea. In my situation I'm behind a firewall and simply using SSH for the convenience and to play around with the protocol." from http://blog.epdoc.com/2009/11/ssh-on-readynas-nv.html should be considered?
Thanks

Do you mean there is a possibility to copy files on ReadyNAS directly from one folder to another (without pushing files over network) without installing SSH?

well yes, if you use scp or mount the /c share via admin user
but I don't think thats not what you mean... to get SSH access, you need ENABLE SSH addon, NOT the toggle SSH addon.
once you have SSH enabled, you simply SSH in (its like telnet but secure), then you use standard linux commands, like mv /sharename/foldername /sharename2/foldername2- ivanekAspirant

Thanks. Mounting /c share works fine for moving files - it works instantly. But to copy files via Total commander I have to let my PC connected a Tcmd running until copying finishes.
Ivan - ivanekAspirantHello,
Thanks you guys I installed SSh on my ReadyNAS as well as WinSCP. But unfortunately i am not able to accomplish my goal to copy files from one folder on ReadyNAS to another without having my laptop conneted to a network. There is only one window in WinSCP for remote disk, the second one is for local. And if I use the copy command on some folders, only local disks appear in copy window (or remote disks mapped as local). So am I doing something wrong? What I would like to do is to connect with my laptop to ReadyNAS NV+, enter commands to copy some files or folders from one place on ReadyNAS to another, then disconnect my laptop and let the process run entirely on ReadyNAS. Is that possible using SSH and ReadyNAS or some other way?
Thanks for your answers.

no, when you SSH in to your nas, its just like opening a command prompt, everything runs within the command prompt. The commands you enter are executed as soon as you press enter.
the process does take place on the nas, but you still must be connected.
I am not sure why this is all being so difficult, you can connect to the admistrative C share using the admin login as indicated in the thread already, and from there you can move files and folders from anywhere within the C share.- ivanekAspirant

Yes, it works fine with moving files, but I need copy files, not move them.
Ivan - well frontview backup jobs will copy from one share to another, just specify the share and the path desired
and you can use the linux cp command instead of mv in SSH, still requires you to stay connected during the copy - ivanekAspirant
