Moving files between shares
I'm moving files around on my ready nas, having setup backup jobs to copy all my data from an external USB drive to my shares.
Problem is, it's shockingly slow, taking hours to move folders of a few hundred meg. I've turned off all other devices on the network to eliminate traffic.
My setup:
Brand new ReadyNas Duo 2x500GB
Netgear DG834 Wireless router (b/g) connected to PS3, Yamaha amp, DSL broadband via CAT5e.
XP Desktop PC (Belkin wireless PCI card b/g/n) comodo firewall/AVG - can't cable this due to location!
XP Laptop (Wireless b/g) comodo firewall/AVG
What's the best way to generally perform day-to-day move/copy functions, as I would if it were a local drive? I've mapped the drives in windows (home/media/backup etc..) and want to move say from backup to my media/videos share.
I assume if I were to cable driect to the router that would be better (but sadly not practical), but surely if I just want to move something locally bettween shares on the NAs I can eliminate the overheads of wireless, without having to set a backup job every time I want to shuffle things around?!?!
Any help very much appreciated. :D
Gary.

- lordgibbnessAspirantDoes your user have the correct permissions to both folder1 and folder2?
- swamp2TutorHow about a way to accomplish the moves without going over the network using OSX?
- swamp2TutorBump. Any native OSX solutions? Just moving a folder should not have to actually literally copy all of the files.

As far as I know, you can't do it using AFP. You can use CIFS and use the same method, but be advised that CIFS does not support the same character set as AFP, so there may be a few issues:

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=40462&p=225167#p225167 - findsparxAspirantHad the NV+ for 4 whole days... still fighting it. I'm attempting to move files from the default \media share to newly created shares on a NV+:
- Tried to do it via Windows Explorer, however it wants to move/copy it via my PC (NAS>PC>NAS) and is slooow. Happy to do it as a last resort, but surely there's a better way... so I did some investigationing.
- Tried to Map Network Drive in Vista, also using Command Prompt (net use X: \\nas.ip.address.thing\c /user:admin) but get a 'System error 67 has occurred. - The network name can't be found.' Also tried in XP and got excited as it asked for the password, but the celebrations were premature as I still got 'System error 53 has occurred. - The network path was not found.' I'm able to create a Mapped Drive of the \media share, so hopefully that means I'm doing something right. I note that \c (root) is not currently available as a share when viewing \\nas.ip.address.thing\ in Windows Explorer.
- Tried to do a Local Upload and Verify of EnableRootSSH_1.0-x86.bin using Frontview, but all I get is a long wait and 'Local file upload failed'.
- Tried checking for Remote updates and it says I'm running the latest firmware (RAIDiator 4.1.8).
- Tried giving it the frowning of a lifetime... surprisingly that didn't help either.
- I read that you can move files between shares by setting up a backup from share-to-share... hmmm, 2nd last resort.
At. Wit's. End.
Any ideas? - findsparxAspirantI solved my issue:
I changed the Security Mode from Share to User in Frontview-Security-Security Mode and rebooted the NAS, but I was still unable to access \\ip.address.of.nas\c via Windows Explorer (Vista Home Premium SP2), getting the message: 'Windows cannot access \\ip.address.of.nas\c - Check the spelling of the name...' blah, blah, blah
But... I did a net use x: \\ip.address.of.nas\c /user:admin with the admin password and, in conjuction with the Security Mode change, I was finally able to Map the Drive.
I'd also downloaded the wrong version of EnableRootSSH as my NV+ is sparc not x86. I've now downloaded EnableRootSSH_1.0.bin (http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/4.00/EnableRootSSH_1.0.bin) in case I need to install it in the future. - zanduoAspirantI tried this:
Extplorer addon but it fails every time I try to move or copy a file; checking share permissions, the share should be wide open.....
FileZilla client from my pc and while I can make a SFTP connection and get root access, again, any file move fails. I have to blame this on some sort of access from the FTP to the share but I've checked and double checked and can't figure it out. Same thing with WinSCP client from my pc
Same failure issue with the ExploreBoard addon
Here is what is working for me now:
I make a PuTTY connection to my NAS with root SSH access. I then use the mv command to move a file or directory where I want, ie: Movies.
PuTTY stops responding at that point (it will come back if you leave it open once the move is complete) so you don't really know if it is doing anything, but if I get up and go over to the NAS and external USB both have lights blinking indicating data is being moved.
Then I launch Beyond Compare on my pc and enter the original location on the left and the new NAS location on the right, showing me the files at both locations. I use F5 to refresh the view showing the data growing on the right. A final compare afterwards of another location that contains a full copy of the files I'm moving ensures me all the data has moved entirely as no differences are shown. - zanduoAspirantforget what I said above...Midnight Commander is just what I was looking for.
Install APT - http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=617
install and configure PuTTy to connect with root SSH access
once logged into PuTTy session type apt-get update (make sure your NAS has an internet connection, not just local network connection)
APT will update
when it is complete type: apt-get install mc
hit Y when it asks if you want to continue
after the install competes, at the prompt type: mc
boom you will see the MC ui and should have mouse control as well. lets you put whatever path on the right and left and move between not to mention showing you real-time progress of files as they move. Great!
Sorry if this is common knowledge but this is all new to me..... - vifferNLAspirant

You can open a second Putty window and use top to monitor what processes are comsuming CPU time. - NetWhizGuide

Thank you! I always forget about the less used MC. Awesome!
