netgear readynas volume is inactive or dead
Hi,
I have this Readynas which is used for backup, but which hasn't been monitored for a long period.
It stood in an office and people did not look at it.
Now they asked me to check it.
After connecting to the system i noticed this :
'netgear readynas volume is inactive or dead'
But so far i could not locate the problem in the logs.
Strange thing is , when i dowloaded the log files then i see for the 'system log' and the 'kernel log' only events that dated from the day i connected to it, so no history.
Other logs show me old log items, but i dit not manage to find the reason why the volume is dead.
Can anyone help me out to see if i can restore the data on it or get it working again?
Kind regards,
TomCC

Does systemd-journal.log go back further?

There are several possible causes for the inactive volumes message:
- multiple failed disks
- loss of sync for the RAID (mdadm)
- errors in the BTRFS file system
If you can connect the disks to a Windows PC, then I suggest doing that first. Then test them with the extended test using vendor tools (Seatools for Seagate; Dashboard for WDC). Power down the NAS before removing the disks, and label them by slot number as you remove them.
You could contact paid Netgear support, though if data recovery is needed it would be expensive. https://kb.netgear.com/69/ReadyNAS-Data-Recovery-Diagnostics-Scope-of-Service
