New 314, can't set up Genie account, can't activate Plex

My brand new 314 runs OS 6.0.6

Can't create Genie account -- it demands security check over and over again. So add-ons are not possible.

Plex is claimed not to be an add-on -- it's "already installed". But it won't toggle on.

So what's the point of a brand new NAS with a "revolutionary" OS if you can't install or use streaming software with it ?

I think the Plex status isn't shown correctly in the current firmware. Also note when you turn Plex on for the first time binaries will be downloaded and installed which may take some time depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Hopefully they fix this in the next firmware release (6.1.0?).

What happens if you try to go to http://ip.address.of.nas:32400/web ? If you can access that page then Plex is running.
  • Thanks.

Plex isn't downloaded -- it just says it is installing, then changes to "install failed" but keeps going round forever (perhaps that what Netgear meant when they describe OS 6 as "revolutionary")

Plex isn't running either -- your suggestion for an IP address to access it just returns "there is a problem loading page" (Firefox).

    ... and I still can't create a Genie account

If you are comfortable with SSH you could try a command-line install.

For Genie you could try a different email address to the one you used to register your ReadyNAS.
  • Genie+ login problem identified: I went to the marketplace login page directly (ie not through the NAS control) and requested a password reset.

Turns out (though Netgear's system wasn't going to tell me) that it wouldn't let me set up an account here, because it assumed I should use the password given when I registered product with Netgear (on what appears to be a completely separate system). Telepathy anyone ?

So now I seem to have access to Genie+, but Plex still won't install or run ...
  • It seems from other threads on this forum that it is common knowledge that the Plex included in OS 6 firmware doesn't work (or otherwise is unreliable), that this may have something to do with its being an old version, and it can't be updated.

Would Netgear care to comment ?

Why on earth would you bundle Plex in your firmware without arranging with Plex to include updates ?

Why is no explanation forthcoming except from the renegade Chirpa ?
  • renegade, I like that ;)

I don't know why they won't comment on here. It would show some care/commitment to the community.
  • My NAS 314 arrived last week with OS 6.0 installed (Plex apparently included). I didn't attempt to install or run Plex before updating, so I don't know if it would have worked at that stage.

Upon setup, I immediately allowed the machine to upgrade firmware to 6.0.6. Now (see previous messages) Plex won't install or run.

Is there any chance that the upgrade should have made changes to Plex but didn't, or that the upgrade doesn't include an update to Plex which is needed ?

If so, could I perhaps get Plex working by downloading a complete 6.0.6 firmware, using it to do a USB boot and then reinstalling OS ?

I shouldn't have to get involved with these kind of mechanics with a brand-new product, and I don't want to if it can't solve the problem, but is it worth trying ?

If you are a PlexPass member you should be able to upload the PlexPass version via the upload button in the latest firmware.
