New Laptop: how to be ADMIN on Nas104
Home office PC is Win7 user Jim is an admin on RN10400 [software is current]
RN10400 is working just fine ... and i have full ADMIN rights on the RN10400.
My ACCOUNT-USER on the RN10400 is Jim
I have a new Win8.1 laptop that connects to my home network via wireless.
My user ID / as admin / on that laptop is Jim Holstein
When I try to add that user to ACCOUNTS-USER it seems to only want 1 word as a user name [it won't accept Jim {space} Holstein
NEED HELP PLEASE: when I'm on my laptop as Jim Holstein I need to setup the RN10400 to accept that user as having admin rights on the RN10400
Thanks, in advance, for your help.

- xeltrosApprenticeWhat about "Jim\ Holstein". That's the way linux handles the spaces usually.
PS : There is a difference between the login name and the account owner's name. The first is used to login the second is purely informational. Are you sure that the login is actually containing the space and that this is not the name of the owner ? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe simplest thing to do is enter credentials for the NAS in the win7 credentials manager (in the control panel) - using the existing Jim account.
Set the user name for the credential to nasname\Jim, and set the password to the NAS password for the account.
If you access the NAS by IP address as well as name, enter two sets of credentials (one for each). - @xeltros: thanks but "Jim\ Holstein" didn't work.
You 2nd point is a bit confusing: when I login to the RN104 > accounts > New User the first box is NAME
That is the box that will not allow Jim Holstein ... error msg = name must be unique and not the name of a share on the NAS
neither is true ... so it must not like the {space} ... that is all I can figure out
@StephenB: Thanks for the tip using credentials manager (in the control panel). It is new to me.
WHICH TYPE of credential should I add? You didn't say.
Windows Credential only allows 1 to exist - - so that can't be it
Certificate-based credential ??
Generic Credential ??
I'm going to guess GENERIC however please provide an example of what you mean by your 2nd point.
ie: I only access the NAS with \\storage [however its static IP is 192.168.1.10 if that helps with your examples]
the Win7 PC is 192.168.1.103
the Win8.1 laptop is 192.168.1.67
Thanks again. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou enter a Windows Credential.
You can enter one using the NAS name (storage), and a second one for the NAS IP address (192.168.1.10). The user names for those two can be different if you wish. - @StephenB:
Wow I've messed up so bad now I cannot even access \\storage from the laptop
I get a log-in & password prompt: everything i try fails.
FYI: My NAS104 just has the user = Jim
Question: You said the username on the 2 windows credentials can be different?
I'm confused - don't they have to equal my Win8.1 AND RN104 user account name?
I entered 2 windows credentials as you instructed: storage user Jim & 192.168.1.10 user Jim
I use the pw associated with 192.168.1.10/admin
no help [access denied]
I also entered 2 generic credentials ... same as above no help [access denied]
The only think "strange" is the Win8.1 login [after the first access denied] defaults to \\storage shows domain = JIMHP [the RN104 admin pword doesn't work for that either]
I WISH i would have set a restore point before I started down this road ... ah well ... lesson learned.
I am SURE that you know what i need to do but I just don't understand enough to do it.
I'm 66 years old with 40 years in various aspects of systems... so I'm really feeling like a dummy.
Please have patience and try once more if you have another idea.
If you are willing I can let you net-op into my laptop
If not - I'll take to Office Max and have them factory reset it. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserFirst of all, if you have only added credentials to the Windows system, all you need to do is delete them again, and you should be back to where you started.
So try that first - deleting both the windows and generic credentials you added. After that reboot, and see if access comes back.
On the credentials themselves-
(a) you definitely want windows credentials not generic
(b) the IP address and the NASNAME are treated as different machines, so they can be both present (and use different user names and passwords). You don't need to set them both up, but if you access by both IP address and nasname it is a good idea. - @StephenB
no need for skype / teamviewer
1. removed the generic credentials and windows credentials
2. setup 2 new windows credentials User=admin PW= the same PW i use to access netgear ReadyNAS in google chrome.
thanks for your continued support and staying with me.
Thanks again. Jim.
