New NAS user- can't access shares directly (only in browser)

I just got the ReadyNAS 102 and got it up and running in it's (mostly) default setup mode. As it all is now, I have an ATT U-verse combined wireless modem/router. It has four ethernet ports that I use as follows:

1 - windows 7 laptop (work computer, usually connected to work VPN)
2 - windows xp personal laptop
3 - logitech squeezebox streaming audio device (plugs into my stereo)
    4 - ReadyNAS

I can discover and administer the ReadyNAS through the browser interface, and everything seems to be permissioned ok, but I am having some odd problems:

I can "add a device" in Win 7 on one laptop, see the NAS, and successfully add it. However I can't see the drives to open them in the windows explorer. When I look at 'network devices' I can see the NAS, but if i try to open it, it clicks open the web browser and I can see the shares that way. However since I can't see them directly i the windows explorer, there is no network path that i can use for something like Itunes on my laptop that points to a folder on the NAS.

If I try to use RAIDar to access the NAS from the laptop, it will see it, but when i select "browse", I get an error that says \\192.168... is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource...." even though the NAS is set to allow access. Anywhere i am presented the opportunity to enter my NAS username/password I do and it takes it, but it still won't let me access the drives from either computer directly.

If I try to set up a backup routine, it can't see either laptop to copy from or to.

Network access SMB Protocol is on and functioning.

I've tried everything I can think of. Any help at all would be appreciated.
Thanks very much,

Derekj

Try enabling "guest" access on the RN102 for the share.

Also make sure the RN102 and the PC are in the same workgroup. That is set on the accounts/authentication tab on the RN102.

Guest access is enabled as far as I can tell. The workgroup name was "VOLUME" but i changed it to "WORKGROUP" to match what it says on my Win XP laptop, but that didn't help - I still can't see either PC through the Windows Explorer.

My Win 7 laptop is a work computer that it usually connected to a VPN. That one shows a local work domain instead of a workgroup. I don't want to change anything there that might affect my ability to connect to work, but I should be able to do this with with the other PC at least.

    Stumped.

On the workgroup, I also have a work domain. I just named the workgroup for everything else to match the domain name.

Also make sure all the PCs have their network connections classified as home or work.

Do you have internet security software installed on the PCs?
  • I have the same issue with my Ready NAS Duo. My hard drive crashed on my pc so I basically had to install a new hard drive and start over. I can see my shares in FrontView but it does not allow me to map a share to a drive. I get the exact same error as above.

"\\hostname\sharename is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The specified network name is no longer available."

I'm new so I apologize if this is hijacking the thread.

If you were trying using the hostname try the I.P. address or vice versa.

Often advice/suggestions are offered by one person, and it can get confusing for everybody if there are two or more users seeking help on the same thread. Let's leave this for now, and if it does get confusing I will split it.

So the NAS has not changed, but the PC has been rebuilt - and the NAS got lost in the process. What version of Windows are you using? This assume Win7.

Start by making sure the network connection in Windows is home or work (not public). Also look at the advanced sharing options for home/work networks in the network sharing center (control panel), and check that "network discovery" is on.

And make sure the workgroup on the PC matches the Duo.

Also open a CMD window (enter CMD in the start menu), and type "ping hostname", and see if it can locate the NAS. As mdgm suggests, also try pinging the IP address.
  • Thank you for the reply.
Good way to put it. Yes..the NAS got lost in the process.
    Yes, Windows 7 Home.
Network is set to "Home Network"
    "Network Discovery" is on
Workgroup is called "WORKGROUP" on both the PC and NAS
I had tried using the IP of the device vs. the name I had assigned it and received the same error.
Pinging the hostname through a CMD window shows that it is there under the IP I used.
I use Bitdefender and have tried to map the share to a drive with it disabled.
    Firmware is RAIDiator 4.1.13
Thank you again for your help.

    BTW, you have a duo v1, not a v2. There's a longer explanation here: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how ... -or-nv-v2/

Do you have the NAS set to user or share mode security? To tell, log into Frontview and click on the "security" tab. If you only see "admin password" and "user and group accounts", then you have user mode security. If you see "share mode", select it, you will end up on a screen that lets you choose between share and user. User mode is more compatible with newer versions of windows (which is why Netgear deprecated share mode some time ago).

Then try going into windows credential manager (control panel), and see if there are any credentials for the NAS. If there are, delete them.

Do you have Windows HomeGroup enabled (it should show up in the Windows Explorer Navigation Pane on the left). If so, was it enabled on the old PC?
Either way, I'd try disabling it. There's a guide here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/27091/ho ... windows-7/ The guide includes instructions for enabling it again, so this is completely reversible.

If the above resulted in any changes, then try again.

Assuming you are in user mode security on the NAS, then try mapping the C share using the CMD prompt.
run CMD by entering it in the windows search bar. Then enter
    net use t: \\ip.address.of.nas\c /user:admin

and provide the NAS admin password when prompted.

This command tells windows to map the C volume of the NAS to the "T" drive letter.
