NV+ failed to boot, volume not found after OS reinstall.

Hi.

I've got an NV+ that stopped booting, stuck in "Booting..." with disk 4 and power led pulsating.

TFTP recovery did not help, but holding down the reset button for 5 secs to reinstall OS had it back up. I can't access the volume now, but I assume that's due to the old 3.x.x software running now (and hopefully not due to a busted volume).

Problem now is I can't upgrade. Check for update fails, even with DNS and gateway in place, and local upgrade fails, in Google Chrome the "Verify and upgrade" button is greyed out, and in IE I can click it, but it's been stuck at please wait for two hours now.

Any ideas?

  • I would have refrained from doing and OS reinstall until you knew exactly the cause of the issue.
An OS reinstall clears the logs, so we won't have any way to troubleshoot the problem to find out the initial cause.

What was the purpose of doing a TFTP recovery? Did you TFTP recover ReadyNAS 3.x firmware or did you TFTP 4.x? If you were on 4.x, and downgraded to 3.x, it is possible you ruined your volume and would need to start over.

The cause is probably a bad disk that was preventing it from booting to begin with; you indicated disk 4 was blinking... I would have started by turning off the device, pulling disk 4, and then rebooting the device to see if it starts.

I would highly recommend calling into support to see if there is anything they'll be able to do to assist you with your device.

I did those things too. Tried booting it with any one disk out, but it was the same. Googling it the disk 4 + led combo seems quite common, so don't think it's necessarily related to disk 4. I had a few ATA errors on disk 3 (less than 50).

We'll see if the 3.x downgrade killed the volume, then I'll just bin it, have a couple of Ultra/Pro 6 units as well, but have some none-critical files I'd like to recover from this device if possible.
  • Try the TFTP boot back to 4.x and then see if you are able to recover it.
  • Having some issues with the TFTP recovery too. I see it send the two first files, the _conf-files, but the image doesn't load. It ends up with failed reading. On the tftp server I see no attempt to get the image file. I even used Wireshark to check for tftp packets when it fails, but I can't see any.

    More ideas?

TFTP boot recovery is very unreliable. Access Frontview with very old version of web browser (2007 version) and attempt update or do USB Boot Recovery.

Are you sure it was downgraded to RAIDiator 3.x? If you press and hold the power button to turn the NAS on you don't see a tech support option?
  • I see in the packet capture that it acquires an IP address from the DHCP server after the two first files, so it no longer has the 192.168.125.41 address. I'll try again today with the DHCP server disconnected.

And yes, it did downgrade it, it shows as 3.0.1pc6 or something in RAIDar (it's switched off right now), and the web interface is the old version.

One option: power down, remove disks, put spare disk in. Update firmware via Frontview. Power down put old disks in and do OS Re-install
  • Thanks, I'll try that.

I've tried both TFTP and USB upgrade now. It says both are successful, but boots up with 3.01c1-p6 and volume shows as 1GB.
  • Well, tried that and it looked good, but now I'm stuck at checking file system. Any suggestions before I continue?

    Thanks.

Have you contacted support yet? Now that your back on RAIDiator 4.x I suggest you do. If over 90 days since purchase open an online case at my.NetGear.com. Please post your case number.
