NVX can't copy file permission following f/w update 4.2.27
Hallo,
Updated firmware to 4.2.27 on the ReadyNAS NVX.
On release it was stated that: "This update includes an updated Bash to fix the "ShellShock" vulnerability amongst other changes".
Prior to this update (since purchase) copying of NTFS file security info worked OK.
Program being used for automatic backup is SmartSync 3.4. This program now reports below errors, even though correct options are checked within it and no changes were made of any sort since it was all set up years ago..
The errors reported (and this goes for every file file being copied) are:
(date/time) - Unable to copy permissions from "C:\Users\ro\Documents\Invoices\" to "\\NVX\backup\daily\invoices\": This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object.
What do I have to do to restore the previous functionality? Any ideas?
Operating system of machine being backed up is Win7 x64, Built 7601.
Security Mode: user
Kind Regards

- vandermerweMasterHow have you set up the cifs share settings and the advanced share settings?
- rockeaterAspirantThanks vandermerwe for your interest.
You are the first person to show any, even though I tried different sources of possible assistance before coming here.
CIFS for share "backup" has Default Access set as Disabled.
Under Share Access Restrictions, I have Write-enabled users entered: "copy" (which does the backup of files copying) and "ro" (which is my profile) and Write-enabled groups: "users".
Under Advanced CIFS Permission I have Group rights: "Read/write" and Everyone rights: Disabled and the same settings in the following window (When new folders are created over CIFS, set folder permissions as follows: Group: R/W Everyone: Disabled).
Under Advanced tab, for share "backup", Advanced Share Permissions have the following settings:
Share folder owner and share folder group are set to "admin", and Read/write permissions for owner/group/everyone.
Also ticked is Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files.
Thanks again for your involvement. - vandermerweMasterTry changing the share group to users in advanced settings, then resetting permissions using:
Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems.
Tick the box and click apply.
If this doesn't work , then I'd suggest setting your permissions wide open and one by one adding the restrictions until you see which one is causing the error.
I'd also try unticking this:
When new folders are created over CIFS, set folder permissions as follows: Group: R/W Everyone: Disabled - rockeaterAspirantI did the things you suggested but the problem persisted.
As a next step, I have created a new user and a new share and gave a completely new task of copying files in an open - public - folder (this was suggested by someone else)
This made no difference.
Then, I changed the default access on CIFS to r/w, ticked Advanced CIFS Permission; "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders" and "Do not allow ACL changes to be more restrictive than this".
For new files and folders I gave everyone r/w rights.
In the Advanced tab, I gave both group and everyone r/w rights.
The went creative and gave user "Copy" the ownership of all the files thinking surely that will fix the "This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object" but it did not.
When I gave the ownership to the user "ro" who is the owner of files on the machine being backed up, it had told me that I cannot connect with the same credentials as different users.
And finally, when I started using different user (copy/admin/ro) to do the copying task in SmartSync software, it has repeated the above error messages about ownership and multiple logins with the same credentials.
I have now no idea what to do next.
In a meantime, I will re-load this latest faulty firmware and hope that either Netgear is going to fix (patch) it or someone has some new ideas... - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhat happens if you copy the a file that has this error manually to the NAS (avoiding smartsync)?
- rockeaterAspirantWell, what happens is that manually the file(s) are copied.
But manually you do not copy permissions, therefore restoration from that backup would have files in all profiles wide open to anybody.
And it is not that some file's permissions are not copied.
Permissions of all (or any) files are not copied despite all NVX shares having permissions wide open.
When trying to copy as different user, I get
I really have no idea what to do next... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou need to use "net use" on the command prompt to delete existing connections to the NAS before logging in as a different user. Or instead e.g. connect via I.P. using the second user.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe "net use" command mdgm is talking about is "net use * /delete"
Here's another way to copy while preserving permissions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323007
Might be worth trying to see if that also has the same problem as SmartSync. - rockeaterAspirantThanks for this.
I can now copy files to NVX as the default user "copy", as well as myself (user "ro") or admin.
Sadly, permissions are still not copied.
As far as xcopy command is concerned the result was:
C:\Users\ro>xcopy C:\Users\ro\Pictures\ \\NVX\backup\testpics /O /X /E /H /K
Access denied
0 File(s) copied
Cheers and thanks for trying to help. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOn the windows side, is the user account you are using in the administrative group?
