NVX can't copy file permission following f/w update 4.2.27
Hallo,
Updated firmware to 4.2.27 on the ReadyNAS NVX.
On release it was stated that: "This update includes an updated Bash to fix the "ShellShock" vulnerability amongst other changes".
Prior to this update (since purchase) copying of NTFS file security info worked OK.
Program being used for automatic backup is SmartSync 3.4. This program now reports below errors, even though correct options are checked within it and no changes were made of any sort since it was all set up years ago..
The errors reported (and this goes for every file file being copied) are:
(date/time) - Unable to copy permissions from "C:\Users\ro\Documents\Invoices\" to "\\NVX\backup\daily\invoices\": This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object.
What do I have to do to restore the previous functionality? Any ideas?
Operating system of machine being backed up is Win7 x64, Built 7601.
Security Mode: user
Kind Regards

- rockeaterAspirantThe main user account that all of the files that are being backed up indeed belongs to the Administrators group.
SmartSync does not check the user on the Windows side. On the NVX side, there is a feature there of inputting username/password values in "Connect to Network Resource" dialogue box and then the "Test" button which checks if the login was successful for the particular user. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserUnderstood. But in order for SmartSync to copy permissions for any user, it needs to be running from either an administrative account, the built-in windows system account, or an account in the backup operators group.
If you run that xcopy command to another folder on the PC (instead of the NVX), does it succeed?
I suspect the underlying trigger is that 4.2.27 had an update to SAMBA (which also had security vulnerabilities). But if there is a way to restore the operation you want with 4.2.27, that would be much better than downgrading the NAS firmware and leaving the security vulnerabilities open. - rockeaterAspirantThanks Stephen for your input.
Indeed, the reason that I persevere with this is that I would much prefer to get the required operation from 4.2.27 rather than to downgrade to a less secure firmware.
Particularly as the downgrade is not an option - it cannot be done :-)
So I am told.
I would have thought though, that being a Super User and a member of Administrator Group is administrative enough for the task of copying...
The tests:
Running xcopy with all of the above switches as Super User fails within the machine (user folder C:\Users\ro\Favourites to c:\temp). And it is switches /O and /X that are responsible for the failure.
But xcopy works OK with all 5 switches (/O /X /E /H /K) when running command prompt as administrator.
Should I draw a conclusion that following the changes at receiver's end (NVX firmware), the intermediary (SmartSync) is now telling the sender (Win7 Super User) that it is not authorised to send some of the info (file permissions)?
If this was the case, I would have to have Admin logged in all the time for the purpose of running backups, as SmartSync does not have a place for inputting admin login credentials... - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhat firmware were you running before?
Well, you know that if you are logged in as administrator, then SmartSync works properly. So one path forward is (as you say) to have the admin account logged in.
Are you using SmartSync Pro? - rockeaterAspirantI was running 4.2.25 (or 4.2.24 - have both in my archives).
Yes, I am using SmartSyncPro but it is a bit of a hassle to have to log in twice every time you re-boot.
And I do not know that it will work. For now I only know that xcopy works...
But will try it soon and report. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
You can downgrade to either of those, but there are important security fixes that you'd lose.rockeater wrote: I was running 4.2.25 (or 4.2.24 - have both in my archives). - rockeaterAspirantThe reason I was under the impression that i cannot do downgrades was a info from Netgear Support and link:
"There will be no options for us to downgrade the firmware. You can check the link here http://www.readynas.com/?p=3203 "
Where they say among other things (IN BOLD RED) "Please be warned that once you upgrade to 4.2.7, you cannot downgrade back to 4.2.5."
Have also found this thread where other people using Egnyte Storage Sync (whatever that is) have trouble accessing their NAS following the upgrade to 4.2.27:
https://helpdesk.egnyte.com/hc/en-us/articles/203101414-Netgear-RAIDiator-firmware-4-2-27
Back to my problem:
Tried to run SmartSync when logged in as Administrator under Win7 and run backups as either of the 3 NVX users: admin / ro / copy.
Sadly still the same error. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou aren't running Egnyte Storage Sync, so that is not relevant.
Sometimes there are constraints on how far you can downgrade. Your 2009 link was specific to 4.2.7 to 4.2.5 (and there was a later issue downgrading from 4.2.16 back to 4.2.15). But there's no problem going from 4.2.27 back to 4.2.24 (or 4.2.25). So you can downgrade, but you will be missing some important security fixes (shellshock in particular).
Not sure if this will help, but did you try setting up smartsync to run as a service? - rockeaterAspirantIt always ran as service.
The reason I quoted that link was that I got it from Netgear Support and neither me nor the guy sending it noticed irrelevant firmware versions... - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWell it is not relevant, even if Netgear support sent it to you. You might have gotten a newbie support tech.
Since xcopy works I think it will be hard to make much more progress w/o more details on exactly what smartsync is doing.
Did you try smartsync support?
