Orb crashes, always

I am running Orb on a ReadyNAS Ultra 4.

It's strange, but while I can get Orb up-and-running for a day or so, I always find that it crashes within 24 hours. It will work on all my media players (PS3, XBOX 360, iPod Touch) for several hours, but then I get the following:

By crash I mean that I will see the Orb as a source in my media players, but as I dive into the folders, there are no videos, no pictures, and no music files.

When I access FrontView I see "std::exception" in the Orb control panel. Hitting the refresh link in there gives me more of the same.

The only solution I've found is to unclick the checkbox for Orb, apply that change, then re-enable Orb by checking the box and applying again.

It will work for about a day (I've never checked in every couple of hours to verify, but I know Orb never works for more than a day).

I've written to Orb a couple of weeks ago, and got no reply. Likewise, I see no mention of this problem in this forum.

Any thoughts?

  • It crazy, but mine hasn't crashed in a few months!! This is great! I guess they fixed something.
  • And don't update your Orb client app, or it will stop working all together: The most recent client is not compatible with the server on ReadyNAS.
  • And just as things were going good, I bought a new iPhone, Orb's client updated, and now it's asking for the updated Orb Caster which isn't compatible with ReadyNAS...

    Just as you said...!

It seems like Orb support has been silently dropped (viewtopic.php?f=36&t=55912). First all references on the ReadyNAS web page were removed and now even the whole sub-forum has been removed. Orb was a pain, we all know, but dropping silently it is not the solution; Many people bought their NAS for Orb support and a lot more have paid for the Orb app.
  • I have pretty-good news regarding Orb... From an email reply I just received:

"We have developed a dedicated / optimized Orb Live iOS app for Orb Add-on and submitted the new App for App store.

Considering that the new App has to go through App store review process, it's difficult to let you know release date. We are waiting for the approval from Apple Stores to release it to the public.

This Orb Live app will be made available free of cost for the first 60 days so as to facilitate our existing customers of Orb Live using Orb Add-on to download at no additional cost. Post the initial 60 days, the App will be priced at US$ 9.99.

Please check this forum thread periodically to know the status of the release of Orb Live for ReadyNAS as we would be updating this once the approval has been given: http://forums.orb.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=34825"

When it becomes available, I will post here and in the other threads....

I have even better news: ReadyNAS now supports Plex, an add-on similar yet far superior to Orb in any way: Give it a try!
