OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

- ahpsi1TutorWell, the driving factor for me was the whole 'bit rot' issue. You want your NAS to be rock solid. You want to put data there and know it is safer than anywhere else. You want the backups that you make (possibly to another NAS) to be known good copies of the data. I'm moving to WDC Red hard drives as they seem to be a good choice for a NAS. Their URE (uncorrectable read error) rate is >1 in 10^14 or ~ 1 bad bit per 12 TB. We used to say on a clear hard disk you could see forever when we'd get a new 20MB drive, now 12 TB isn't even impressive. Btrfs and ZFS are the only viable FS's with built in fault tolerance (note I'm referring to the filesystem, not the underlying hardware) you could easily deploy on a CE NAS and Netgear is the only manufacturer supporting both in the markets I am in.
Certainly yes, put FreeNAS or Nexenta on there if you like (and I like and have used both), I'm just looking for 'safe' and 'simple'.
And before I forget, I'd like to thank everyone that helped get OS6 running on the EOL hardware. Thank you! - chirpaLuminaryOS6 is using btrfs, which is still fairly immature when you compare to the likes of ZFS. If you are considered with bit-rot, I'd still look at other options using ZFS.

My biggest concern there is the 6 bay limitation. Looking at Nexenta If you want something close to the Community Edition licensed max of 18TB you would need most of those bays for zpool. For better performance though wouldn't you want at least one L2ARC? I'm guessing at least one for ZIL? If there was an expansion chassis available for the Pro it would make it much easier though I'm not clear if it is unwise to use expanders or port multipliers.
To be safe my Nexenta box is starting with 16 internal drive bays with an option for 20 more. :D - AMRivlinApprenticeThe Pro6 will "never" have an expansion bay, as there is only USB2.0 support.
The new 516 line has eSATA and there have been hints at a 5 bay expansion box.
os6 and whatever updates NTGR pushes, will probably be the end of the line for Pro6. I am just glad we were able to take advantage of os6 albeit unsupported.
Pro6 Max (using 4gb drives) is 18.6TB under Raid5
Reading this: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/WD-Gre ... 19517.html
There will be 5TB drives by the end of 2013
Then the Pro6 Max will be 23.3TB under Raid5
20TB is plenty for me, and if my needs are ever greater than that, maybe it is time for a ReadyData unit. - tkapinAspirantHi,
I am interested to OS6,but should it work on "plain" PRO 2 ?
reformat is no problem, because i have an old Synology drive with backup.
I have both drives in JBOD mode, so i can remove anything or replace with other drive for first steps under OS6.
Is there some option to get / mount drives in USB case with "old" data connected to Pro drives running OS6, is there some better support for external drives ? This is not real problem, i can map old drives with ext4 on Syno, or i can restore 90 percent of data from backup via LAN.
I'm home user, so homebrew solution is no problem :)
And because i have some spare drive, so i can test anything .. if needed :) - AMRivlinApprentice

The Pro 2 is a 1.8ghz Atom, with 1GB ram. It should work for the new OS, but can't be sure the plex transcoding ability will be up to par.
I am running a Pro6 and the processor load is low, and ram usage has hovered around 300mb commit. - chirpaLuminaryI am running OS6 on an Ultra 2. It works. I'd ponder going to 2/4GB ram though if possible.
- AMRivlinApprenticeI bought some DDR2 for my Pro6 and maxed it out at 8GB, but I rarely use that kind of memory, maybe if i fart around with virtualization I can take advantage of that.
- tkapinAspirantI was forget to add . My Pro2 is few weeks upgraded to 2GB RAM .. , now problem :)
After upgrade i can see only difference in SWAP, this eats one GB more :) At one or two GB system i can see free only cca 150MB free.
No visible difference at perfomance.
