OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

And thank you to everyone for posting their work. I would not have gotten this far without your posts on this forum! - demetrisAspirantAnyone happens to know the default transmissionbt v3.00 username and password?
I have tried all combinations i could find without success.

- ATCISTutorHi Everybody,
Did I miss some advice/instructions on how to go about the OS6 Version 6.0.6 to 6.0.8 update on the ReadyNAS Ultra 4? I accepted the update from the GUI when I logged in this morning, and now I'm hung up at "Booting. . ." with the power light flashing at me. It's been like that for about 3 hours now and it doesn't look like it is going to recover on its own. I've already held in the power button once to force a reboot but the results are the same. Fortunately I do not have any critical data on the drives so I could do a factory reset if necessary, but before I try that I thought I'd ask the experts about the preferred method of recovering from this on OS6.
Have you any advice for me?
Thanks in advance! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could see if an OS Re-install fixes the problem.
If that doesn't it's possible your OS partition may be full or that something went wrong during the update.
Did you have any add-ons installed?
There is now a volume read-only boot option that has replaced the skip volume check boot option from earlier OSes. See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu
You may be able to recover your data using the volume read-only boot option. - ATCISTutor

Dear mdgm,
Thanks for your reply!
1.) What would cause the OS Partition to become full? I have no idea what the status of the OS Partition was prior to attempting the update. I do know that the Data Partition was a tad less than 33%. . .
2.) NO. No Add-ons whatsoever. Matter of fact, I was planning to remove the Plex and Photo's Apps as soon as I figured out exactly how to do that :D
3.) I will look into the "volume read-only boot option" you mentioned above
4.) Would you please post a link (if there is one) for the OS Re-install procedures appropriate for my particular situation?
Edit: Please disregard #4 above. I just performed the OS-Reinstall from the boot menu. Unfortunately, it did not help :(
Any other suggestions? Is an OS reinstall from USB an option, or should I just go with the factory reset and cut my losses?
Thank you VERY much (in advance)! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1. It is a 4GB partition. It can be filled by an add-on not working properly or something like that.
2. O.K.
3. O.K.
4. http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu - ATCISTutorPlease see my edited post above. . .
Any other suggestions? Is an OS reinstall from USB an option? If so, what USB Flash drive creation tool would be best to use (link please)?
Thanks again! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredUSB Boot Recovery would probably be quite pointless.
Did you try the Volume Read-Only boot option? - ATCISTutorRE: Did you try the Volume Read-Only boot option?
Check your PM, I will do that now. Will let you know the results. . .
Edit: Results - Still says "Booting. . ." for 15+ minutes now. . . :(
