OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retireddeft1, it should now be fixed. As your data volume was empty I triggered a factory default.

@mdgm @Skywalker
Thank you so so much, I got the setup wizard and all is OK 8)
God bless you, ReadyNas experts !
The only questions I ask myself is :
1) Can I do now without having any problem :
- a factory reset (via boot menu or web ui)
- an OS reinstall (via boot menu or web ui)
- an upgrade firmware (by web ui)
What scares me is that the firmware is not designed for this model...
2) Is this normal I can't exclude files/folders for the backup task ? (not functional in v6.1.6 or incompatibility with my old Ultra2 ?)
3) WakeOnLan didn't work without bringing some modifications (I think I've read this on the forum)
I won't bother you with other questions I swear :?
Thanks again and have a nice day :) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1) Should work fine. If you have issues ask for help here.
2) Exclude is only for Rsync. Have you tried using Rsync.
3) Maybe try 6.1.7 RCs. If missing features come for legacy models they will come unannounced. - Deft1AspirantThanks mdgm for your answers :D
Even new firmware uprgades will work via web ui  : excellent! I thought there would be hardware control in order to accept or cancel the upgrade.
For Rsync I don't know if it's a good thing for my installation, let me explain quickly :
I've an HTPC with [a ssd for system (win 8.1) and] a 2Tb for data (pictures, music, videos, software, documents), which is completely $hared.
I want to plan a task in order to backup the shared data drive without one or two directories to the nas.
This backup will be accessible via ReadyDLNA and the exclude directories will be saved in an other directory which is not accessible via ReadyDLNA thanks to a second tack.
I want to execute the 2 tasks (incremental) when I pushed the backup button of the nas.
It's easy to set up.... If (Win) timestamp backups accept exclusions :x
So if I'm not wrong, Rsync isn't for backing up a windows share to the nas ?
Sorry for extending the discussion about my case  - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

If your NAS can run the OS, then there is support for doing upgrades via the web ui.Deft1 wrote:

You could install DeltaCopy on your PC and use that to enable you to do backups via Rsync. Or run backup software from your PC that may be more advanced that the backup that can be run from the web ui of the NAS. - Deft1AspirantThanks for answering so quickly.
Finally, I think I'll backup the entire drive, and with the web ui hide the folder(s) I don't want people to access (cause I don't want to create users and permissions, etc.). I remember seeing that option in the web ui  . An other solution would be to create 5 tasks (1 for each folder I want to backup) and configure the backup button to execute each task, if it's possible. But my preference goes to the first one :)
I'll try in the evening. Have a nice day RN experts! - I tried a test backup job today (using OS 6.1.7 RC4) which did not work. Here is the output of the log:
Backup Job Name: Test
Backup Job Type: Incremental
Protocol: ftp
Backup Source: [Documents]/
Backup Destination: [remote:ftp]/ftp://192.168.1.102//data/Backup
Backup Start Time: Sat Mar 15 2014 17:38:03
Backup Finish Time: Sat Mar 15 2014 17:38:03
Backup Status: Fail: failure during copy.
The nas connects properly to the ftp on the other nas as I did a Test Connection.
Here is what my syslog reports:backup_ftp.c:370 (error) curl_easy_perform() failed: 21 Quote command returned error

That should probably look something more like this:Backup Destination: [remote:ftp]/ftp://192.168.1.102/Backup
- Great! I should not have been using a full path as I do when setting up NFS backups.
By the way, will the fan and cpu animations ever work on legacy boxes? I can say at this point that I have almost a perfect OS6 running on my both my boxes. All Readycloud features work (IPhone apps, web interface) except for network discovery button on my Pro Business. Wol now works as of OS6 RC4. OLED auto turn-off using a script that fires off on boot-up via crontab. The only thing that I have now tested as of yet is Readynas Replicate.
:D - Deft1Aspirant@all Hello
I've done my first full backup yesterday, using the "Win Timestamp" (so without exceptions) successfully. The only problem is the backup button which doesn't launch automatically the backup task as expected. But it works when launching the backup task via the web UI.
According to me, there are misses in this v6 : can't set the timing for disk sleeping (or I didn't find the option in the web ui), backup button doesn't launch backup, exceptions not working with Remote Win backup tasks. I wish this would be added/corrected in the next updates  .
But I would like to say I'm very satisfied doing that upgrade, I really love the new interface, so thank you again for helping us getting the OS6 whereas it's not possible officially.
Have a nice day!
