What firmware were they running before?
Did they enable AntiVirus?

I think they were on 6.2.5 (I think) presumably there will be a log somewhere? The anti virus wasnt enabled before but I can check.
- StephenBFeb 10, 2016Guru - Experienced UserThe old firmware version should be in the logs. If AV is enabled, it will kill performance. So check that first. Going back to 6.2.x is a multi-step process, and unfortunately requires a factory reset (recovering all data from backup). Netgear does not recommend it, but there are a couple users here who have done it. It's probably better to avoid moving back if you can. One alternative is to try 6.4.0 first (which can be simply installed). Or do a reset with 6.4.2, and see if that resolves the connection problem also.

I am pretty sure though I upgraded it to 6.2.5 a couple of weeks back when working with mdgm. They have plugged in a formatted USB drive and are going to let it run tonight on the schedule. I had a google and it seems others have had similar issues with backup since upgrading to 6.4 One step forward and two back it seems.

I had a small backup glitch after I restored my configuration on 6.4.2. The problem was that the scheduled backup jobs weren't running - disabling the schedule and re-enabling it was enough to solve it.
One thing you could try to do is recreate the backup jobs (a bit painful, and any incremental jobs would need to make the full backup first).
