Readynas 104 drops out when copying to it
I have a readynas 104 configured with four 4tb drives in raid 5. I've managed to copy about 6tb onto the device without issue but now whenever I go to copy something onto the box, lets say a single 4gb file, it starts out ok and will copy around 1gb of the file at 31MB/second but then the connection drops out completely and I get an error message saying:
There is a problem accessing Z:\....
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.
Now I've obviously mapped drive Z: to the box and when I say it drops out, I can still ping it's IP address. I have tried both NIC's with different cables and in different ports on the router with exactly the same result every time. I am running two other buffalo NAS boxes off the same router and they are working fine.
I can view the files etc over readycloud and check it's performance without problem and in reasonable time, but then as soon as I copy a file over in explorer, readycloud all but freezes and wont let you navigate through the various screens. And once I try to copy a file across I can still view files and directories on the box in explorer, albeit it takes about 30 seconds or so to load each directory which is ridiculous, but before attempting to copy each directory will load almost instantly as you would expect.
Any ideas?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you have access now, then I suggest that you simply turn off snapshots.
- perkijAspirant"We"... ie me and third level support have tried that, deleted all existing snapshots, it makes no difference. It's a straight up F up with the firmware, THE READYNAS 104 FALLS OVER ONCE IT REACHES AROUND 70% CAPACITY!!! They can't get it to work in their own lab... I'll be fair and say the problem seems to be isolated 4 x 4TB drive configurations. They're using WD Red drives, I have Seagate ST4000DM000... the two most common 4TB drives on the market.
I've asked for a refund or an upgrade to a product that does work (baring in mind I bought this thing over a month ago and have spent many, many hours troubleshooting it for them)... apparently NO manager has been available to talk to me... seriously!!! a manager is supposedly calling me back.
Poor design and worse customer service... kudos to support though, they've put some time in as well... it's impossible to support something that doesn't work straight out the box! - davexyzAspirantI have an idea for a work around which is to turn off snapshots, delete all snapshots and use the snapshot folder as file storage .it seems to work with smb but not nfs
Can this protocol be turned on for this folder probably by ssh useage? If it can can someone post instructions.
Anyone? - satz404AspirantHi, i've tried to "slow down" samba connection and with a trasnfer of 3 MB/s the copy is stable.
The problem is when the speed increase.
I've tried with 1GBs and 100MBs, samba and FTP .
The connection is dropped by NAS after a random time.
Maybe the problem is the btrfs and his snapshot.
On my old netgear stora i've XFS and no problem at all, but on this one there isn't xfs, so ext4 is good.
Someone can try to format the raid in ext4 and run some test?
I don't have another storage to move all my data (like 5TB full of 8TB) :(
Regards Satz404 - davexyzAspirantIn for a penny
Readynas RN104 4*4TB hard drive
I might have found a solution
I have Turned off snapshots and deleted all snapshots
Then
Turn on ssh
login to nas as root with password
then
cd ..
cd data
cd media
change snapshot directory permission to all
chmod 777 snapshot
for some reason this unblocks the "unused" file space
I deleted the snapshot directory which is recreated everytime you delete something even though it is turned off, nothing in the directory though
I assume that i am operating in normal mode as guest and snapshot is reserved for root with the file space.
I know virtually nothing about linux and nothing about the inner workings of the RN104 so try this at your own risk
As I said it works for me - perkijAspirantSTAY AWAY FROM NETGEAR PRODUCTS!!!
3 working days after requesting a refund or an upgrade and no reply from any "manager". Phone back again and a loser from customer support tells me Netgear don't issue refunds for products that they think they can fix! Fair Trading on the other hand tell me I have a legal right to an immediate refund if a product is unable to perform it's intended function as specified. I think a complete failure to copy to or from the box counts as a complete failure of it's function. Lets see who wins this one.
Complete lack of foresight on their part. Until it's solved I'll be spending my time writing unflattering reviews of the Readynas on every online store and forum that I can find... if they don't come to the party I'm pretty sure it will cost them more in the long run!!!
My job number is 22122742 - satz404AspirantI had no problem until i come to a 3 tb of data :(
- davexyzAspirantI agree with perkij
My experience with Netgear was OK with the ReadyNas NV+ V1 product but then followed the NV+ V2 debacle and now RN104. I can only speak for my personal experience but support is cursory I just checked and another case of mine re this time regarding this issue with the 104 has now been closed without actually informing me but without any resolution being offered or any progress being advised. The last message was "can you leave this with us for a extended period"!!
Synology seems the way to go - I liked the RN104 till:
My RN104 with 4 x ST2000M001 running on 6.1.4 is locking up a couple of times a day....
Right now it is stuck for 45 minutes since i tried to copy a 1 GB file to it.... I will probably have to pull the ac plug again to get it back on its feet coz it seems not to come accesable anymore. Pulling plugs often results in data loss and that is the last thing i want.
Normally i am very patient when it comes to new products but after owning this for 8 months time is nearly up.
If Netgear won't fix this REAL SOON, i will sell the device or give it away and get one from another brand. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Did you contact support?dishmagic66 wrote: I liked the RN104 till:
