ReadyNAS 1100 and WD2002FAEX drives
Hello all,
I picked up a second empty 1100 and decided to make it my main backup with 4x2tb drives but I'm having all kinds of weird issues.
First silly thing I did was just go ahead and stick all four drives in and turn it on, after several hours of frustrating errors such as corrupt root, dead drives, ATA errors, etc etc and numerous tries at fixes such as swapping drives and chassis's I did some research.
And that hasn't helped much except now I zeroed out the drives, (except for two that now have a cyclic redundancy error) and only stuck one in until it finished installing and synced. But the NAS didn't how up in RAIDar, it did come up in the browser though, after a reboot it showed up in RAIDar and it had finished installing etc.
So I installed a second drive and RAIDar said it was starting sync and all that good stuff. After it was done I had a green light on my volume but it said it wasn't redundant even though I had two green drive lights. I tried getting into Frontview but it goes no where, so for the heck of it I installed a third drive and it started to sync (and it's still going)
Anyone come across this before? And is there and easy solution to the cyclic redundancy error? I can't get the WD Lifeguard to do anything with it and windows doesn't recognize it either.
Thanks,
Steven

- StevenAAspirantOk, so after it supposedly was done syncing the third drive it was hung up, I had to hard reset the unit and when it came back up I was able to get into Frontview which said the volume was syncing. Checking the health tab said the third disk I added was dead. It said to reboot and do a file system check which proceeded to do and when it came back up I just have a blinking blue light and it doesn't show up in RAIDar.
- StevenAAspirantGuess it's not a common problem or not many people have the same configuration.
Anyways, I did a factory default with the three drives and for the past 4 days it's just been sitting at "Installing" when I get some more time I'll report more. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhere did you pick up the 1100? The 1100 has been discontinued for a few years or so I think, so I guess you purchased second hand?
What version of RAIDiator is on the 1100 unit? - StevenAAspirantI picked it up a couple months ago, so yes, it is second hand, I had 4 Seagate ST3250620AS in there and it worked just fine, tried swapping drive modules and xchange modules. But always end up with the same result when I stick the WD2002FAEX drives in.
I haven't had more time yet to mess with it yet.
Oh, it had 4.1.6 on it, I updated it to 4.1.8. - StevenAAspirantOk, I took out the third drive and rebooted it and it only showed one drive and kept hanging. So I took out the second drive, defaulted it and it came back. Stuck the second drive in and it hung again. Power off and back on (soft power had no effect) and it came back up but with only one drive. Hot unplugged the second drive and it said "Disk remove event occurred on SATA channel 2." even though it said no drives were present on channel 2.
I'm leaving this for another day, again. - ijayceAspirantDid you get anywhere in the end? I am having similar issues with a ReadyNAS NV+ V2 and WD2002FAEX drives...
Beating my head against the wall is no longer an option... :-) - StevenAAspirantOut of the 5 drives I had, I found 2 that worked, I installed 1, let it come up and initialize, installed the second and let it sync and it was fine. The last 3 drives were a no go and eventually failed SMART and diagnostics, so there going back on RMA now.
Steven - Marto731AspirantTo Ijayce,
WD2002FAEX disks are not on the NV+ v2 compatibility list.
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641
This means they have not been tested in the v2 chassis, and we cannot confirm that they
will work successfully.
Interestingly, when you click on 1100, the FAEX drives are on the compat list for that chassis.
Regards, Marto - StevenAAspirantI finally sent them back, been one thing after another.
In the meantime I picked up an NVX and in the process of getting it configures (starting a new thread for that)
Meanwhile I picked up a used seagate st2000 and stuck that in and it expanded without a hitch.
Have more swapping around to do but the WD2002 will all end up in the NVX when I'm done.
