Hi Coolfeather2,
Welcome to the community.
You could consider using FTP or HTTP over the internet. This will involve opening/forwarding of ports on your firewall.

What type of backup, manual or via some backup program? For manual backups, HTTP or FTP is an option. If by backup software that can't use either of those, you might want to look at ZeroTier (do a search of the forum) or another VPN solution.

Both FTP and HTTP are not secure, I am manually backing up

The NAS does support FTPS connections from an FTP client (and there is a setting to mandate FTPS) - so you can make that secure.
ZeroTier, OpenVPN and OwnCloud are all possibilities for remote access.
