ReadyNAS 516 and OS 6.5.0 slow to the point of unusable

this issue surfaced for me with OS 6.4.  The workaround then was to turn off Virus checking and ultimately a firmware update.  Now, with 6.5.0 the issue has returned. I am getting transfer rates of 3-ish MB/sec.  Not usable.  Turning off virus checking does not make a difference.  Is this a known issue? Thanks.

    Hi ArthurP,

Could you tell us if you did the manual or automatic update? Was this the case on another PC or computer on the network? Lastly, send us the complete device logs so we can check what's wrong with your system.

    Kind regards,

Thanks.  I was a bit unclear on the timeline.  I noticed the slowness, went to the NAS Admin page, saw there was a firmware update available, applied it manually and saw it did not make a difference.

Who do I sent the log file to?

Manual or automatic update would make no difference unless of course you weren't prompted to do an automatic update when you opened the web admin interface (which would suggest internet connectivity problems).

The logs would be helpful to see what's going on on your system.

The anti-virus performance issue was fixed in 6.5.0, so one would expect that something else is the cause this time.

  • Out of interest what addon's are you running (if any) and have you made any changes or mods via SSH or other means?

How many drives are you running?

Is the speed issue there for both reading and writing?

I'm sure one or both of the netgear people above will help get it sorted but was just interested as I have a 516 and it is working fine with 6.5.0

The apps I run are Plex, Logitech Media Surver and the Netgear camera app (though I don't actually use the latter).  This has been the state since I first set the NAS up.  I have not gone into the NAS to do any customizations.  It's all stock.

and, yes the speed issue is there for reading and writing.

Looking at the logs I can't see an immediate obvious cause of this. 3 MB/s would sound like you are using Wireless G to connect to the NAS. How is your PC connected to your network?

  • I have a 316 NAS unit, and the 6.5.0 upgrade hammered it. I have it as the primary file server for folks in a small office. Small tho it may be, access to files is critical. Business critical. If you are still having these issues, have you tried disabling the 'ReadyCLOUD' service? If not give that as shot. I've gone through a week of this erratic connectivity to shares and slow transfer speeds and seem to have found relief/resolution when I turned off 'ReadyCLOUD' and 'ReadyNAS Replicate'.

Because things started working 'normally', I have not tinkered with anything else. The folks on the network need to access their files on the shares so when the NAS started to behave, I just stopped poking sharp sticks at it, but I think I maybe didnt need to disable the 'Replicate' service, but I'll experiment with that later, perhaps over the weekend when nobody is about.

try turning off 'ReadyCLOUD', see what that does.

I, too, am having very slow read and write speeds through explorer. I am have already updated to Readynas 6.5.0. I am getting KB/s after the update but before I was getting up to 15MB/s. I haven't changed any configurations yet, just the firmware. Is there anything that I need to tweak?

Do you have ipv6 enabled in the NAS?  If so, try disabling it.

  • Hi there,

I've upgraded to the new firmware 6.5.0 and really wish I hadn't. I'm experiencing streaming issues to my Nvidia Shield using the Kodi app now. When watching a video it will just pause randomly, skip ahead a few seconds and then it will take a while to catch back up with the stream. I've since factory reset the shield and reinstalled everything. The only other thing which has changed is the firmware in the RN104 / so I'm guessing the new firmware is causing the issue. Please advise how I can downgrade. I'm sick of this unit and its dodgy firmware being released every couple of updates. I should have learnt by now just to leave the firmware.... Grrrr
