ReadyNAS 516 OS 6support SSD caching?

Hello,

Does OS 6 support SSD caching?

I have a client who would like to replace their 516 with a Synology DS1815+ to utilize SSD caching.

When I compare the two devices, side by side, I think the 516 is the better hardware platform (even when upgrading the RAM to 4GB on the DS1815+).

Thoughts?

Regards,

Nick

  • No support of SSD caching on OS6.

Be careful with the DS1815+. It's based on the Intel Atom C2000, it's affected by the clock degradation defect. There is a long thread on Synology forums.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I did remember hearing that about that processor but honestly I did not catch it.

Even though its affected by this defect, I don't think this device will out preform a 516. In other words, I don't think switching over to a setup that supports SSD caching, is going to get the extra increase in performance, the customer is looking for. The device is mostly used for storing print artwork done in Adobe Creative Suite. No video production or video ripping is done.

Is the WebUI more friendlier on the Synology boxes?

Will the RN516 support it? Or would it require a new hardware to be purchased?

Where is this on the roadmap; rough estimate?

Any hardware requirements would be made clear once it's available.

Late this year, but that's very subject to change. Could end up being next year.

Even without SSD caching our devices perform very well. We put a very powerful CPU in the RN516
