ReadyNas 6.2 (NAS locks up entirely)
EDIT BY MODERATOR: Please see the post at the end of the thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=456217#p456217
I guess i am not the only one this is happening to!
everything worked fine for 6.1.9 (except for my root at 99% problem last month)
once I updated, I transferred aprox 2 gigs of information it locks up every time
all apps are working fine.
as a business owner i have come to the conclusion (with the amount of problems i have been having) ReadyNas is not meant for a reliable means of backing up seems majority of the fixes are "back everything up and factory reset!" I think that answer is as good as telling someone with computer problems to hit there computer a few times and see if it works.
now i have gone to support many times yes they are quite helpful but only within 90 days of purchase of the unit! then they insist that i pay for a extension of that support.... i have 3 IBM servers and when there hardware fails (one little problem with a driver one year later) they back up the reseller in making sure my system is back up and running within 48 hours (no they are not leased or have a protection plan)
If it wasent for the guys in the forums i would have beaten the system with a bat (please see Office space the movie)... sorry for the rant just truly frustrated with the system

- DrDSPAspirantSo, over the weekend, I decided to pull the trigger and "reset factory defaults" on my RN104 to see if it would help this issue. All went well... I re-imported my settings and copied my data back to the drive. The drive stayed up for 2 entire days (a real feat nowdays) while it was happily copying data. I was hoping that by reformatting the RAID volumes and/or reducing the snapshots back to zero would help the locking up situation.
Unfortunately, doing this did not seem to help. A few hours after my data finished copying, my RN104 locked up again. At least for my situation, my drive only seems to become unresponsive while it is idle. Maybe this is a big clue.
I also set the panic and panic_on_oops settings to see if an automatic reboot would occur, indicating a kernel panic, but my unit did not reboot. So, at least in my case, a kernel panic does not seem to be happening... - sauronekAspirantAny news?
Solutions?
Only solution: downgrade to 6.1.9? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHave you tried freeing up some space on your volume?
- sauronekAspirantYes.
But tell my why on 6.1.9 all work.
One thing changed on my side update to 6.2.x and problems starts.
If i can't fill volume to full, tell me how much space must be free?
I realy afraid insert next disk in this state of NAS (what hapen when NAS lock when volumes rebulid?) - af8GuideMy drives are 76% free and I still get the issue. Have you managed to see anything from the logs that we've all submitted?
Many thanks in advance. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt sounds to me like there are different issues for different users going on here.
Perhaps when the next firmware is available, 6.2.3, some of you could try that and give some feedback on whether that resolves your issues. - jzeeviAspirantI'm having the same problem as what seems to be reported here. When I first got my NAS it worked well. Then I upgraded to 6.2 and it all went bad with multiple lock ups for (apparently) no reason. From reading the threads, sounds like there's a suspicion that a kernel panic or app oops may be at fault.
How do we reach the Netgear development community or QA folks to let them know of these issues? (L1/L2 tech support seems to think that if the NAS can be rebooted it must be a config problem, but past 90 days won't help out....)
Also, shy of hard rebooting (pulling power) is there a better way to reset and regain access? If not, that's fine too. I see lots of folks refering to telnet/ssh access - how does that work on these boxes?
I guess my frustration is getting the better of me - any idea what direction I need to go to start to figure this out?
josef - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf it locks up and the safe shutdown via the power button doesn't work, the UI doesn't work and you can't get in via SSH you can't shutdown the NAS safely.
SSH can be enabled under System > Settings > Services > SSH. Do have a read of the warning before proceeding with enabling that.
Can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)? - jzeeviAspirantButtons are dead, no UI, and I thought I enabled SSH (can't check, it's locked up again) but no connection via SSH....
I sent my logs in, hope I did it right...
josef - jzeeviAspirantHmmm... I got :
