Readynas and strange behaviour

Hi !

i got several readynas systems running + a linux fileserver.. here the other day i decided to move 4 disks ( samsung 154ui ( 1.5tb ) disks) from my linux fileserver to one of my readynas boxes ( nv+ v2 ).. the disks have been running for 1.5 years now connected to a 3ware escalade controller without any problems ( no smart errors ).. so i remove the disks , put them in a usb enclosure , connect them to my laptop and remove all partitions, put them in my nv+ v2 and it fires up.. since the disks where used , i opted to erase volume ( when cliking setup in raidar ) and it completed.. now my problems started.. the nv+ v2 wouldnt start at all.. it just hung on booting.. i pulled the disks from that and connected them to my laptop and it says device not ready.. got a bit annoyed and tried the same disks in my older nv+ and it says that 3 of the 4 disks are dead.. well i tought no big deal.. buy some new disks then..

yesterday i picked up an ultra4 ( my second one ) pretty cheap and decided to try the same 4x1.5tb disks there just for fun.. and guess what.. disks came up fine , volume synced and all good.. so clearly the disks are fine.. however i decided to again try them in the nv+ v2 , nv+ and usb enclosure and no dice.. all says that the disks are dead ( except for the utltra4 )..

so.. does the readynas write something to the superblock or mbr or something that makes the disks unavailable to other devices ?

  • Iceyo,
You need to be careful.

Can you list the model numbers of the NAS'es you have.

If you have a new Duo v2, it has an ARM processor. You cannot swop a group of disks from
a x86 or Sparc NAS,and expect them to work. You must perform a Factory default, and this
    will rebuild the RAID structure.

hi there... tried a factory default on both the nv+ and the nv+ v2 and both says that only one of the 3 disks are good.. the ultra 4 on the other hand says all good.. even tried a full erase and online scrubbing and file conistensy check on the ultra 4 , and it says all good..

what i dont get is that no other system is able to read the partitions of those disks.. not windows , not ubuntu ( fileserver ) nothing except for the ultra 4 :P
they all throw cannot access disk at me..

and im not trying to preserve data when swapping disks.. im just trying to get them to work :P so a full format wouldnt be a problem in any way.. i'd be happy to wipe all partitions on the disks, if i only was able to read them on another system than the ultra4..

    anyways..

    first ultra 4 ;

    -Model: ReadyNAS Ultra 4 [X-RAID2]
    Serial: 2DK61C0L015FC

    second ultra 4 :

    Model: ReadyNAS Ultra 4 [X-RAID2]
    Serial: 2DK61B03004EB

    nv+ v2 :

    Model: ReadyNAS NV+ v2
    Serial: 2V0221EF001D9

    nv+ :

    Model: ReadyNAS NV+ [X-RAID]
    Serial: 23J5147T00898

as i said , im perfectly aware of the different acrhitecture of the systems , and not beeing able to swap disks between them and read the data, but i do expect to be able to pull the disks from one system, format them and fire them up in another one.. but that isn't the case with those 4 disks :P
