I would certainly test all the disks including the spare.
As for your data , you may be able to read disk 1 using linux reader after attaching the disks to a PC:
http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/.
This assumes you were using Xraid.
It is usually disk 1 that can be read, but in some cases can be disk 2.
If you can access the data back it up.
If all disks are ok then it sounds like there is a chassis fault. You say it is 2 years old, did you buy it new?
