ReadyNAS Duo v2 / WD RED 3TB x 2 / Erase Volume
Have a new ReadyNas Duo v2 and 2 x Western Digital RED 3TB drives. Orginally setup as Flex-Raid (RAID1).
Running latest firmware 5.3.7.
Trying to Erase Volume. Why? With my other ReadyNases I would do an Erase first, then config the array. Maybe complete overkill but some of the drives were not new so I thought it to be a good idea.
We'll it's going on a couple days now and the unit has the power and both drive lights lit solid, but will not respond to a 2 push power off. Cannot see it in RAIDar. I guess with Erase it's supposed to power down automatically when done.
Should I wait some more?
If I hard reset the unit I can probably get to the point where I can setup the Volume again and have it sync. Just not sure I feel confident about it now. Read some other posts about weirdness with the WD RED 3TBs.
Thanks!

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThis is the secure erase? That would be pretty time consuming on two 3 TB drives.
- efxiAspirantYeah it's the Erase option that's available via the RAIDar Setup menu where you can pick X-RAID2, Flex-RAID, or Erase. I was thinking the same thing. I'm still waiting. I wonder if the LED status Power = ON, Drive1 = ON, and Drive2 = ON plus non-responsive Power button is "Normal".
- efxiAspirantAFter poking around the forums the only thing I've found that appears to be similar to my problem is that my drives are both "locked". Whatever that means. I'm trying a Secure Erase on one of them to see if it can be "unlocked" that way. Every time I restart the device it looks like it's doing a Factory Reset. Every single time.
- efxiAspirantMDGM helped me out and my problem was indeed "locked" drives. What I had done is a secure erase on the pair of WD RED 3TBs in RAID1. I interrupted that process and ended up with drives that were "locked".
My solution was to download an Ubuntu Live CD and boot to it with only one of the drives attached. I disconnected my system drive during this process. Once in Ubunto I issued the commands:
hdparm --user-master user --security-unlock NETGEAR /dev/sdb
hdparm --user-master user --security-disable NETGEAR /dev/sdb
Actually had to try this instead:
sudo hdparm --user-master user --security-unlock NETGEAR /dev/sdb
sudo hdparm --user-master user --security-disable NETGEAR /dev/sdb
Then I disoconnected the drive and did the other one. Put back into the NAS, did a Factory Reset and everything is now working fine. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes this has to be done as the 'root' user. On some systems you need to use the sudo command to do stuff as the 'root' user.

I've also got a Duo V2 and new Wd red 3tb (x 1)
It only recognises 746gb!
Fw is 4.1.12 which it automatically downloaded from netgear.
Wouldn't update to newer firmware manually, is that the issue?
Any help would be appreciated,
Many Thanks

The problem is that you have a duo v1. A duo v2 would run 5.3.x firmware.jonrsv wrote: I've also got a Duo V2 and new Wd red 3tb (x 1)

Check the guide here: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how ... -or-nv-v2/
Your v1 is limited to 2 TB drives. So you either need to downgrade the drive size or upgrade the NAS. If you upgrade the NAS don't go with a duo v2, get an RN102 instead. - jonrsvAspirantThanks for the Info Stephen, but my unit says V2 on the bottom, and on the box!!??
Bit confused - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHave a read of the article Stephen linked to. You have a Duo v1 hardware revision 2. NetGear put those stickers on the Duo v1 units and later decided to release a new product with very different hardware and call the new product a Duo v2.
- jonrsvAspirantHi
Sorry having trouble trying to post and view links. Keep logging me out all the time.
Yes, I have v2 hardware revision, not v2 model.
Hopefully I can have mates 2tb, sell him my 3tb.
Many Thanks.
