ReadyNAS Duo/NV+ v2
I am new to this type of storage, that being said i have issues. I installed one 3 T drive into the system and set it up as Flex-Raid i then installed another 3 T drive. My question is should i be able to see two separate drives on my network in explorer ?

- mre150Aspirantno, flex raid will give you just one drive.
- vandermerweMasterIt depends what raid level you selected when you set up the volume.
Did you select Auto, RAID 0, RAID 1 or JBOD?
If you selected Auto (the default), you will have a RAID 1 volume with the addition of the second disk.
You will see the volume as a single volume and there will be no increase in size as you will have made the volume redundant by adding the second disk.
If you want 2 separate volumes ( 1 on each disk), you will need to factory default and recreate the flex raid setup as JBOD.
If you want a single large volume in RAID 0 you can do this, but it is not recommended as failure of either disk will destroy the entire volume and you will lose all the data on both. disks.
Please make sure you backup your data if you have any of these setups and back your data up before doing a factory default as this will destroy data on the Readynas. - vegas13AspirantI set it up as JBOD and i can only see my share files on my network. I assumed i would be able to see both drives and access and move data to each one as i needed.
- vandermerweMasterIn the readynas GUI, there should be 2 disks and 2 volumes. Are there?
How are you accessing the first volume from your PC?
Have you created any shares on the new volume? If so can you see these or mount them or the new volume as network drives? - vegas13AspirantI can see 2 disks and 2 volumes on dashboard
on windows 7 i am using my computer and then network to see the NAS i only see media and backup
i have moved files to the media folder and can see them...... LIGHT BULB just came on !!!
no shares on the new drive means no shares seen on the network !
just created one and yes i can see all of them
Thanks so much for the help !! - vegas13AspirantOne last question if i have a hard drive and say put a bunch of video, pictures whatever on it and then install to the NAS does the data get deleted or can i access it ?
- vandermerweMasterIt'll get deleted.
Edit: Please make sure you backup all your data on the readynas to at least one other device, regularly. - vegas13AspirantThanks for all of your help ! i can now move forward with setting up my storage for all of my media. Is USB 3 the easiest and quickest way to get data to the nas ?
- vandermerweMasterThere are 2 issues here: your mode of connection (ethernet or usb3); and the file protocol you use (cifs or nfs usually)
If the data is on your LAN, setup a backup task to pull the data to the relevant share using cifs or nfs. Here you would probably be using gigabit ethernet as your connection.
If it's on a USB drive then clearly USB 3 (or 2) would be your only option, but you can still set up a backup task to pull the data using one of those protocols. Make sure you don't let the NAS format your USB drive!
