readynas not providing power to bay 1
Hi,
My readynas pro 4 will not reconise any drive i put in bay 1.
This includes drives working fine in other bays.
I dont beleive the drive is even spining up. (power issue?)
I have tried hot insertion, Off insertion and Factory reset with all bays populated.
Fontview reports no drive in bay 1
bay 1 light remains off (except during boot time)
Firmware: 4.230
Disk 1: Seagate ST2000DM001
Disk 2: Seagate ST2000NM0011
Disk 3: Seagate ST2000NM0011
Disk 4: Seagate ST2000DM001
Any assistance greatly appeciated

Is it under warranty? That would be 5 years from purchase (if you are the original purchaser).
If not, I think you now have a Pro 3.

Could it be a patition issue,
i get the same issue with bay 2 when i hot swap a replacement drive.
it wont take new drive, but will rebuild on failing drive if i reinsert it.
Fontveiw still report old drive in bay 2, even tho ive replaced it.
my replacement drives are ex zfs volumes.

??? The NAS needs to reformat them when you insert them.

I don't think so. Though the new drives do need to have at least the same number of sectors as the old ones, otherwise they can't be added to the array.
You could try zeroing one of the replacements, powering down the NAS and inserting it in slot 1 with all other drives removed. Then see if the NAS does a factory install.

I picked up a used Ultra4 with the same issue. Many SATA drives will not spin up if there is no valid SATA connection, so it may not be power, even though the drive doesn't spin up. On mine, power was definately not the issue.
It was the SATA backplane that was bad on mine. I tried a little bit to troubleshoot the backplane, but gave up. Instead, I swapped a backplane out of another machine. The backplanes for the NV. NV+ (V1), NVX, and Ultra4 are identical, so I can't imagne that the Pro4 is any different. NOTE: The NV backplane did have some decoupling caps installed that the others did not, probably because drives of that era drew a lot more start-up current. Or maybe Netgear considered them overdesign where Infrant did not.
Of course, I had already had a retired old machine for the swap. Buying one for a swap does carry some risk that it's the SATA controller on the main board, not the backplane, that's the issue. And a lot of folks seem to think and old NV or NV+ is worth a lot more than it is. If I didn't have the ready replacement, I might have tried more roubleshooting; but without a schematic, it would be a bit tough.
Given that Netgear won't repair units not under warranty, I wonder if they could be pursuaded to make schematics for legacy units available. Of course, then replacement parts would be the next issue.
