ReadyNAS NV+ Seems really slow
I just bought a ReadyNAS NV+ 2x750 and am trying to transfer all of my data from a raid array to it so I can retire my old server.
First I tried to use EMC to get all the files over to the NAS, but that did not work at all with an average of 40,000 errors in compares or
timestamps per partition.
I could not copy directly from the SATA raid through my network because the server always has files open on almost every partition.
But I did try one partition of 10 gig with 8 gigs of files on it. It started well but eventually dropped to a speed of less than half a
meg per sec and said it would take days so i aborted it.
I transferred one partition directly to my new laptop HP Dv7t widescreen over the network very quickly. i then tried to copy that
10 gig partition worth of files to the NAS through my gig network and it still was averaging maybe 500k/sec. This is with the laptop
gig ethernet card set for jumbo as well as the NAS. I have done all the performance tweaks to the NAS from the forums. I run through
a dlink DIR-655 extreme.
Looking through the forums I decided to try a direct connect and transfer started at about 2mb/sec, climbed slowly to 8-9mb/sec,
and then continually dropped over time to about 500-600k/sec and stayed there. Needless to say it took hours and hours to finish,
and I have 22 more partitions to copy :(
If I grab a big file and drop it to the NAS transfer is 28 meg/sec both ways. I realize there is a big difference between this and a
whole partition full of files and folders of various sizes, but I really don't think it should take 9 hours to transfer 8 gigs over a gig
lan should it?
Pretty disappointed now because I am looking at days and days just to get my data onto the NAS, and if file transfers are this
slow I might as well just use a usb external drive where I average 12-15 megs throughput.
I have ordered a memory upgrade for the NAS and 2 more 750's, I sure hope there is some way to get better data transfer rates.
Can anyone help? The laptop is running Vista Home Premium SP1 (of course). The NAS has been updated to latest software
and firmware.
It seems a lot of Vista problems with speed of transfer, but I have tried all the tips here and no matter what the rate always
levels at 500-600k/sec

- Dooku1AspirantPlease try this solutions.

Also if you are running any sort of security software or virus scan software please try turning it off, as I have seen such things as McAfee slow transfer speeds down considerably. - fmahannahAspirantThanks for the reply, but I have already done all of the tweaks suggested at this site. Nothing seems to really make
much difference. Dang Vista has some serious problems, but if I downgrade to XP Pro my HP laptop support and
warranty go out the window.
All I am trying to do is copy data from old drives to the NAS and it has been days and still no reasonable solution
that runs at decent speed.
I can drag and drop large files back and forth at up to 28m/s .... but as soon as I try to copy large collections
of folders and files of various types and sizes, the transfer rate starts high and quickly drops to around 500-600k/sec.
What I have done now is format a USB as Ext3 using readdynas, copied files from my vista machine into that drive
using the driver for windows, and then I hooked the USB up to the NAS and am doing an nas backup to see if that
is any faster at all, but so far it is also crawling along for a 5.3 gig backup.
One thing I did figure out with permissions was that Vista in all its power takes any drives or files created in another
operation system and makes them read only for safety. So if you want things to end up OK you have to take
ownership of the drives in Vista (takes forever), and then make sure the shares on the NAS are set to assign permissions using
share permissions.
Update: the 5.3 gig backup direct from ext3 usb to NAS took 30 minutes! When compared to what Vista was going to take this
is at least one way for me to get my data onto the NAS, which is all I really need to do since normal use will not be
copying gigbaytes of data back and forth. - Staffan1AspirantUse FTP or rsync for faster transfer speeds - that is my tip.
.staffan - madking426AspirantI was having the same slow down problem but now.....
Try this:
1) Go and get a Netgear Gigabit switch GS608
2) Make sure you have the jumbo frame setting ON for the NV+
3) Set your computer jumbo frame to 7936 (if you have a Mac, it's easy! I'm not sure about PC, sorry!)
4) Connect your computer & the NV+ to the GS608 Giga switch while they are off
5) Turn on the switch, NV+(it may need some time to boot up) & your computer
6) DONE!
My experience:
Before: Read ~ 12 to 14 MB/s Write ~ 10 to 13 MB/s
After: Read ~ 38 to 40 MB/s Write ~ 34 to 36 MB/s
I reckon the problem is the router having jumbo frame issue even it said it's a gigabit router! (Believe me, I try so many from different brands!)
I hope all these can help, good luck! - fmahannahAspirantEven when I try direct connect bypassing the router (DIR 655) the speed does not improve at all.
I strongly believe that it is just something I have to live with when using Vista. I have applied every tweak there is for improving file copy and directory listing performance with Vista and the best I get in I/O tests is 12-14 read or write.
Now that I am done transferring entire drives to the NAS it is not really much of an issue, but I would really like to see the speeds that others are reporting. - Swifty1AspirantMy read/write speeds for standard file transfers in Vista vastly increased when I replaced the system copy utility with this freeware utility. It's called TeraCopy and it really is a wonderful utility. Hope it helps.
http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php - fjuppeAspirantHi,
I experience exactly the same file copy problems as fmahannah ....
Brand new Vista Home Premium laptop upgraded to Ultimate with SP1, all tweaks mentionned in this forum tried....
Example: A folder with 97 .jpg pictures (folder is 257 Mbyte) will get over @ 1,06 MByte/sek with Vista standard explorer. It takes approx 3 minutes to get them over
Installed TeraCopy as one member suggested, same folder takes 12 seks to copy onto the NV+. This looks fine t the first glance, 12 seconds for 97 picturefiles is not that bad, corresponds to about 20 MByte/sec write speed. Now, trying to copy 18000 smaller files (basically midifiles but in another format), totally 500 Mbyte all together, Vista explorer starts out @ about 9 MBytes/sec but after some 200 files, speed is reducing significantly. After 2000 files copied, speed is avg 400 KByte/sec and Vista tells me it's around 15 min's left. After 15 mins' Vista tells me its 25 Mins left.....
Using TeraCopy on the same folder, copies over in 23 mins. This folder copied over in less than 3 minutes on my XP based old laptop with 100 Mbits network.
New laptop is Gigabit network card ( I'm not using wireless at all, turned off) , latest drivers from Marvell.
MTU = 1492, Jumbo is disabled. (even with Jumbo enabled, the same behaviour)
I tried direct connection between laptop and ReadyNas NV+, basically same results.
ReadyNAS NV+ 4x1TB drives (upgraded yesterday from 4 x 500 GB), expansion just finished. There should be no or very little defragmentation on the drives now. Latest firmware 4.1.4, 256 MB ram. Journalling disabled etc....
Although, I know, this is a ReadyNas Forum my feeling of the slow performance desribed here and elswhere is probably a problem in Vista itself, but with the gigant knowledge avalable in this and other forums, there must be a solution or workaround that, at least give the same performance as was present in Win XP. Sometimes this problem makes me think of installing XP on the brand new laptop, but then I miss all the preinstalled, very nice programs that I need.....I don't want to go dual boot, the only option I have is to install XP after Vista and this failed the two times I'v tried.
I'v read most/all topics around network performance issues on this forum but it seems all ideas, solutions, tricks, tips will not help me out.
Torbjorn - PricklyAspirantAfter a couple of trouble free years with XP I recently changed ("upgraded") to Vista and have had a poor performance since.
The settings of the NAs did not really seem to impact on the situation, using Vista SP1; one recent change that seems to at least have to resolved most of the "stalls" was in the wireless interface configuration: enabling the "enhanced througput" option in the advanced tab has defenitely improved matters. I too am having the same exact problems as the OP. I am using a Windows Vista Asus laptop with wired Gigabit ethernet set at Jumbo Frame size 9014. Transfer speeds vary all over the place. Sometimes will transfer a batch of jpeg files at 2 to 3MBps speed, other times might transfer at 10 to 12 MBps speed, other times might go up at 20Mbps speed and other times might crawl at 400 to 500KBps slow speed.
Transfering a large segment of folders full of various data, speed starts out fast (say around 10 to 12MBps) but as OP described in his case, it gradually and continually slows down in transfer rate until it rests at the low KBps range of say 300 to 500Kbps! Damn this. Disappointing and frustrating. I was NEVER able to successfully complete a large backup transfer of folders over to the NAS nor from the NAS to another NAS or PC because of this slow down near the end of transfers! I always wind up cancelling cause it turns into "Days to complete" slow speed.
Whether or not this is related to a Windows Vista OS bug or a ReadyNAS bug, it is a bug that Netgear team should really investigate SERIOUSLY and not ignore it I am disappointed in this aspect of my ReadyNAS DUO and ReadyNAS NV+ that I blew big money on. Money that could have served me better elsewhere in hind-sight!
I am using firmware v4.1.6-T21-Beta on my ReadyNAS' and also had same buggy behavour on v4.1.5 firmware.
Netgear development team should discuss this bug with their Microsoft contacts to see where exactly the problem is... and once and for all FIX it! To me, it seems like there is a memory management bug somewhere in either Vista or ReadyNAS code where it gets choked off near the end of transferring a large bulk of folders and files. Transfer one large file, it goes fine. Try specifying to transfer many files contained in folders with many subfolders, etc. and it will choke up and slow to a creeping crawl near the later half of the transfer seemly never to complete for days.
Please address this flaw ASAP! Don't sit on it. It does the ReadyNAS DUO and NV+ line of products no good at all! I behooves me that all the pro reviewers never once mention such poor behavour in their reports... if they did, I would not have purchased these ReadyNAS. I wish those reviewers were more thorough in their testing or 'ahem, cough, cough'... more honest in reporting this frustrating fault.
All I can ask is for Netgear to finally PLEASE get this fixed! Thank You!
Oh, one more thing I want to add... I tried that BS software called Teracopy... it does not improve things at all and goes just as slow or slower than Windows own copying function. As far as I am concerned, it is probably just advertising hype for getting Teracopy program plug.
It does not work faster.Swifty wrote: My read/write speeds for standard file transfers in Vista vastly increased when I replaced the system copy utility with this freeware utility. It's called TeraCopy and it really is a wonderful utility. Hope it helps.

Wonderful utility? yeah maybe, I give credit to the developer(s) for it. But increase in speed and improvement for our case here? Sorry, but no way does it improve transfer speeds over the Windows Vista copy utils. Same or slower in my tests.
