ReadyNAS NV+ stuck on "Booting Please wait"

I'm having a very similar issue, though removing the disks had no effect. I had to move the NV+ as it was too loud in the location it was, so I shut it down correctly (waited for it to turn off by itself). Then once I had moved it, by the handle, to its new location, about two metres away, I turned it on again.

Once I turned it on and attached it to the network in its new location It said on the front panel that it was either reinstalling or updating FW, I can't remember exactly, but I assumed it was just doing that as it hadn't been rebooted in over a year. Once it stopped displaying that it went to 'Booting Please wait' and then just 'Booting' and never left that state.

I've tried everything I dare to try, I downloaded and reinstalled the OS (reset button 5 seconds), I reseated and successfully tested the memory, I tried USB booting (power button 20 seconds), I tried bypassing the volume check (power button 5 seconds), none of these things had any effect and it remains in the Booting phase. How can I proceed, based on the condition that the data is infinitely more important than the device?

Many thanks.

  • Should I boot it up without disk 4 in then hotplug a new disk? Please be aware that I'm not touching anything until you guys tell me what to do <3

I'd boot it up without disk four.

Then copy off at least critical data to another device.

When complete, hot-insert the new disk into slot 4.
  • I've booted it without disk 4 in, but now the lamps are showing the third disk blinking, with the fourth LED being permanently on. It seems to have an IP address, and says C: 0/0 MB free.
  • In fact, in RAIDar, it's now showing me Green, Green, Dead, Not Present, although the disk that is in slot 3 was checked yesterday; it passed a SMART test and a generic read test in SeaTools. Is this the result of either a dead SATA port in the NAS? Can I try putting that disk into slot 4? Or is that a huge nono? As it stands it won't let me get any data off the thing.

This does look like a situation where you should seek to purchase some help with data recovery.
  • Ok well... taking that into account, can I try putting the drive in slot 3 into slot 4 to see if it's a slot problem, or is that dangerous?
  • Oh man I put the drive from slot 3 into slot 4 and I can see all my data again. I'm going to copy it all off then hotplug a new drive. Cross your fingers. Thanks for all your help.

So perhaps there is a problem with slot 4. After you've got your data backed up this is something you can check.
