Extreme vetting for battery installation is not needed because :)
(1) Unless you use extreme force, you won't be able to install battery in reverse direction
(2) There is always a schottky diode in between battery and RTC circuit, the reverse breakdown for the diode is at least 30V, so you won't damage anything even if you managed to install battery in reserve
(3) If you look carefully, you can always find a "+" mark on battery and battery holder. In this case, it is on metal clip (not very obvious).
