ReadyNAS Ultra 2 won't boot up

Hi everyone,

Been reading here awhile and decided to go and buy a ReadyNAS. Found a nice Ultra 2 on eBay (from a reputable seller) and went ahead and bought it.

I received it today, but I can't seem to get it working.

When I press the power button, all the lights on the front flash on and off in a split second and only the top power LED remains on solid blue. The fan is also spinning at high speed and doesn't change. I left it like that for awhile, but it still didn't change and no other LED's lit up. Similarly, the LAN ports don't light up when a cable is plugged in (neither on the router too) and USB drives don't get detected either.

I've tried doing a reset (holding in the reset button and powering on), but nothing happens. The power LED lights up solid blue and the fan just keeps going.

I've also tried doing a USB recovery, but again, the power LED just lights up and the fan keeps spinning, no other lights or anything even on the USB stick.

Any ideas guys? I've contacted the seller and asked whats up as it looks like I'm going to need a refund.

Just on a note, the NAS didn't come with drive trays (this was stated in the auction), but I assume that doesn't affect any of the function of the NAS other that providing easy removal and vibration reduction?

Many thanks for any help!

The NAS won't do anything w/o drives installed (it begins by installing the OS on the drives). And you need the drive trays to install disks.

    Thanks for the reply.

I've installed drives just by pushing them in to the SATA slots. Do the drive trays make another connection to tell the motherboard that a drive is installed? I thought they were just for ease of use and vibration reduction. I would like to get a pair of trays eventually, but I thought it would work temporarily by just pushing them into the SATA slots? Even with them in the problem remains the same :(

I've never tried inserting them w/o the trays. However, I suspect that will damage the connectors on the drives, since there is no strain relief.

You should try to get one tray anyway - otherwise you can't really tell if the ultra is functioning. There is always a risk in buying used.
  • The seller has refunded me 50% of the cost which is good. May as well just hang on to it as I only paid £40 for it anyway. The guy confirmed that it was working correctly before shipping, but of course I can't confirm that statement.

I'm waiting on a hard drive from Netgears HCL to arrive to fully test it. Hopefully its just the hard drives I've tried that won't work with it.

just buy the trays - they will only get harder to find. They are NOT optional equipment, the seller should have included them.

    Here's a US link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Netgear-Readyna ... 3cddda34fc

Make sure you don't purchase one for a rack-mount product (Readynas 1100 trays will not fit). The model you want is RND4TRAY1

    Thanks for the link.

I'm in the UK so that person doesn't ship here unfortunately. Can't seem to find many here. Don't want to buy one before testing that the NAS actually works properly, which should be testable without the tray even temporarily.

Well, the system is not designed/intended for use without them. I'm doubtful that you will get a good mechanical connection. Are you changing the orientation so the backplane is at the bottom (so the connectors are not carrying the weight of the drives?).

Could try that, hadn't thought of doing it that way. I was just going to using some noise dampening foam underneath to support the drive for testing. Either method should work as a temporary solution to see if it even boots.
  • Did you manage to get it to Boot as I have exactly the same issue, but I only have 1 disk from the HCL. It immediately goes to a solid blue light and no network connectivity is seen

This thread was started by someone who was trying to run the unit w/o trays. This was not a normal failure situation.

I've split a new post from Kalleway to its own thread (viewtopic.php?f=64&t=76707&p=427068#p427068) and am locking this one to prevent confusion.
