ReadyNAS Ultra drops connection
About 2 weeks ago my ReadyNAS Ultra 2 started dropping it's connection to all the computers in my house every few hours or so. It also becomes unresponsive. While I can see the CIFS and AFS shares being advertised clicking on either of them either times out or takes minutes to respond. Rebooting the NAS gets everything back to normal for another few hours. Even Frontview becomes very slow. This started on RAIDiator 4.2.24. I tried reinstalling 4.2.24 and also upgrading to 4.2.25 (which I'm now on) but neither resolved the problem.
Things I've tried already:
-Reinstalling RAIDiator 4.2.24
-Upgrading to RAIDiator 4.2.25
-Issue is the same from my OS X machine (recently upgraded to Mavericks) and from my Windows 8 computer
-SSH'ing into the box and running top doesn't show anything abnormal and when the issue happens my SSH connection is terminated (broken pipe)
-I tried restarting the AFP and CIFS services while the issue was happening but it didn't solve the problem
-I've shut down all other services on the NAS except for AFP and CIFS but the issue still occurs
-I managed to download logs from Frontview while the issue was occurring. It took several minutes for the logs to download instead of a few seconds. Any pointers on which log may show the most relevant information for this type of issue?
Any pointers on diagnostics I can run to find out what's happening or on what could be causing this? The NAS is a few years old and nothing in my setup has changed over that time except for the recent upgrade on one of my computers to Mavericks.
Thanks.

- vandermerweMasterHave you considered that this may be a network problem?
How is the NAS connected to your LAN?
Have you tried eliminating any network devices and connecting directly to a PC to se if the problem persists.

Check the disk smart attributes as well. - jmonhollandAspirantInteresting...I don't know how long it's been going on for but I noticed the same exact problem on my Ultra 2 Plus today.
Not sure where to begin because Frontview is extremely unresponsive, i.e. minutes between clicks before anything refreshes. It's almost like something is consuming all of the resources.
The only recent changes were an upgrade to 4.2.24 several months ago and installing NAS Monitor and ReadyNAS Remote (not sure why I installed this but was probably just planning to mess around with it.).
Any ideas, other than removing those add-ons, I'm not sure where to begin. Due to the network connections getting reset, I'm really hesitant to try and re-install any FW. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you can, take a look at the fullness of the OS partition. That would require ssh access.
Another thing to try is to delete all log files (don't upload them). - sguszAspirantLooks like there is plenty of space on /dev/md0
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md0 4.0G 542M 3.3G 14% /
I'll try clearing the logs from Frontview.
I checked the SMART+ attributes on my disks and all looked okay. No errors or anything were listed. All those counts were 0.
My NAS has been running without the issue reoccurring for over 20 hours now. The only difference from usual is that I do not have any active AFP mounts from my Mavericks machine. Instead I connected to my share using CIFS from that computer yesterday. Not sure if this is just coincidence or not. Could something going wrong over an AFP share take out the whole NAS requiring a reboot to get performance back to normal?
My NAS is connected to my network using a Linksys gigabit switch. My computers are connected to the same switch. Next time the issue occurs I'll hook the NAS directly to one of my computers to eliminate the switch or any of the wires as a possibility. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserSince you've ruled out the OS partition being full, there is no need to delete logs.
I don't use AFP, so I have no advice there. But it does seem worth following up on.
What add-ons do you have running? - sguszAspirantRight now I have no add-ons enabled. I shut everything down except for CIFS and AFP. As far as other stuff I've installed; I have root ssh (so I could check some things like run top and check disk free) and Plex Server but I shut Plex down about a year ago and haven't started it since. I also had Ready NAS Remote running but I stopped that too. I'm not using my NAS for Time Machine even though I have Mac's in the house.
What I did notice today from my Mac is that while my share was connected using CIFS my transfers where much slower than when I was using AFP (seemed about half speed). Also ran into an issue where iTunes hangs trying to play any of my songs while the share is mounted over CIFS and wouldn't let me add anything new to my library. I checked and my CIFS is setup for read/write but iTunes was acting the way it does when a drive is read only. I was able to create new files and folders on the share from Finder so I can definitely write to the share. I unmounted my media share from CIFS and remounted with AFP and iTunes seems to be behaving again and transfer speeds are back to normal.
Now that the mount is back using AFP I'll see if the shares disconnect and the NAS hangs up again. - sguszAspirantOkay. It's been a few days and now and the issue is back in full force. I went direct to my Mac and still had the issue. The NAS is back on the network now since the switch was ruled out.
Anything else I can check? I'm going to try shutting down the AFP share again but SMB was so slow in comparison it will be painful to have to rely on that. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat disks do you have installed?
- sguszAspirantSeagate 2TB's.
Disk 1: Seagate ST32000542AS 1863 GB
Disk 2: Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166
Disk 1 came with the ReadyNAS. Disk 2 I ordered with at the same time as the NAS. They've both been in the NAS since I bought it which was in early 2011. - sguszAspirantThe problem has now deteriorated to the point where the NAS doesn't last more than 15 minutes without requiring a reboot. I can't even get through a sync with my iPhone or iPad before iTunes hangs because the NAS is unresponsive. I've plugged the NAS now directly into the router that came from my ISP and move my PC's and Mac's to the same router but that didn't help. As mentioned going straight from the NAS to my Mac didn't help either so I'm not surprised. I may try a factory reset over the weekend but my hopes are not high. It looks like the NAS will need to be replaced.
