ReadyNAS Won't Show Up on Windows Expolorer

Our home network has a BT Home Hub 5, two Netgear Switches and various Windows XP, 7 and Windows 8 PCs, an iPad and a games console on it as well as the ReadyNAS Duo v2 which we have had for just over two years. The ReadyNAS is used to hold various media files and store backups.

NAS Firmware 5.3.6 (now updated to 5.3.11)
RAIDar 4.3.8
ReadyNAS Dashboard 1.0.0.251

We use either Internet Explorer or Google Chrome.

We always used to access the files on the ReadyNAS using Windows Explorer, but recently (over the last few months) it often doesn't show up at all under the Network devices.

I don't know whether the problem dates back to when we changed ISP to BT and started using the BT Home Hub 5. That Hub does IP address assignment by DHCP and the ReadyNAS is currently 192.168.1.64.

Investigating this problem has made me realise that the RAID discs are very nearly full up - RAIDar gives the Volume Status as C:RAID Level x2, Redundant, 1841 GB (100%) of 1841 GB used.

I did an OS reinstall today and updated the NAS Firmware, which now lets me see the ReadyNAS Dashboard using Internet Explorer. I have also deleted some files off the ReadyNAS to bring it down to only 95% full.

But still the ReadyNAS will not show up under Windows Explorer.

Any suggestions ?

Rhys

95% is still awfully full, you probably need bigger disks (or a second NAS).

But I don't think that's related to your main problem. The NAS data is accessible, correct? So the only issue is that is doesn't show up in the network list?

There are some simple workarounds. You can add it as a network location on your newer PCs, and you can create desktop shortcuts for the NAS (or specific shares).

This could be happening when the NAS becomes the "master browser" on the network. That's not certain, and unfortunately there's no way to control that on the v2 products.
  • Thanks Stephen.

Yes 95% is much too full. I think that the 2nd Copy backup software we have been using is keeping lots and lots of old versions of files and so eating up the space. I will try to sort that out.

The NAS data is "occasionally" accessible - sometimes it shows up in Windows Explorer or from programs like MS Word (it did for most of today) and sometimes it doesn't. How else would we access the data on the NAS ?

I haven't heard of the "master browser" before, so can you tell me any more about that ?

Here's an old windows article on the master browser topic -https://support.microsoft.com/kb/188001 Though dated, AFAIK its still correct.

There are 5 ways to reach the NAS from a newer version of windows:

    (a) select the NAS from the left pane of windows explorer. My guess is that is the one that isn't working for you.
    (b) Open "computer" and select "map network drive" from the pulldown menu
    (c) Open "computer" and right click on the large pane, selecting "add a network location"
    (d) Enter \\nasname\sharename in the address bar of windows explorer (or \\nasipaddress\sharename)
    (e) create a desktop shortcut that links to \\nasname\sharename
