Removed disk resync fails

Am looking for some help. Have the Duo v1. I had a 2TB WD Green disk in for several months without problem. Inserted a second a few months ago, everything sync'd properly and working well. Had someone remote to my box to help install an add-on I bought (Sickbeard) and took the liberty of taking out drive #2 to keep data safe just in case. Ever since, drive 2 insertion triggers a resync which fails - it stalls at between 8 and 33% at which time the NAS drops off of Raidar and I can't ping it.

If I hard power off, remove drive 2 and turn on, it starts up, checks drive 1 and all is ok. Reinsert drive 2 and sync fails again.

Have since performed a low level format of drive 2 via a USB sata adaptor - didn't help. I've now removed drive 1 and performed a factory reset of the unit with drive 2 with it in bay 2. Raidar reporting drive 2 now formatted and I can browse it ok (though of course it's empty).

The million dollar question - if I put drive 1 back in bay 1, should a resync work ok of the data on drive 1 to drive 2, or will the empty drive 2 result in drive 1 getting wiped?

If you simply reinsert disk 1 into its original slot (leaving disk 2 in place) then I think it will wipe your data. Disk 1 should be treated as a new disk in that scenario.

I would check the SMART stats on drive 1, as your stalling could in principle be caused by either drive.

Maybe test both drives with WDC's Lifeguard diag?
  • Both drives have passed quick test with no issues.

If I could get the data off drive 1, I'd gladly stick it back in. I running WDC Lifeguard via USB to SATA adaptor, but obviously can't access disk content - windows wants to format :(

You can get the data off drive 1. Power down the NAS, put disk 1 into slot 1, remove disk 2 altogether and start it up. Then copy the data over the network (and back up the config).

Then you can power down, revert to drive 2 in slot 2 with no disk in slot 1, and then power up. After that starts up, hot-insert disk 1 (which will be wiped), and then restore everything.

Note that you need to reinstall any addons before restoring the config. Which I guess implies that you should remove any backups you don't want to carry over before saving the config.
  • Hi. So is it possible that if I turn off, plug in disk 1 in bay one, disk two will then sync to this?

I'm sorry, I didn't understand your last sentence about configs? I think I lost this when I did a factory reset?

Since this re-sync has stalled several times in a row, you should get your data off the NAS before attempting it again. So initially leave disk 2 out, and then do the backup. Then re-insert disk 2, and it should sync.

At the moment, disk 1 retains all your original data and your config. So with disk 1 installed by itself, you can save the configuration to your PC, and back up the data.
