reset share permissions
i have a cifs share all all files are owned by nobody and nogroup... the cifs share is and should only be accessible to members of the users group.
if i go back into advanced share permissions and set these as follows
Share folder owner: nobody (leave this)
Share folder group: users
Share folder owner rights: Read/Write
Share folder group rights: Read/Write
Share folder everyone rights: disabled
then click
"Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems."
would this change work for me?
please help???

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retirednobody is the guest user. I'd set the owner to "admin". This is to reset permissions on existing files as a one off. For permissions going forward for new files etc. you'd configure settings under Shares > Share Listing > Sharename > CIFS.
- thiggoAspirantthanks for the quick response. if i change the owner to admin and set the other properties as above, members of users group will all still be able edit, delete, existing files on the share right?

- james_k_pAspirantI'm totally lost. My NV+ has been working fine for years, I decide to change it from share mode to the domain mode, and attempted to change rights. It was taking forever so I stopped it, went back to share mode and it won't work.
I read about how share mode is end of life now and you need to go to user mode, so I did. I created users to equal all of my users and they can read all the files now.
But on some directories, I cannot write, delete, etc. I've done what was said above, no difference. I've set the Share Folder Own to my username that I created on it, as well as setting the Share Folder Group to Users. I want everyone one to have full access.
Should this be done when the little circle busy thing stops swirling? Or does it run in the background and I need to check it tomorrow? Does the ReadyNas need to be restarted, or my PC? - vandermerweMasterYou should be setting user security mode not domain mode. Share owner admin.
You have set read/write access for all users and everyone?
Your windows PC user and password are the same as that on the NAS?
You have reset all permissions as mdgm has instructed? - james_k_pAspirant

Correct, i was explaining how I got into this ridiculous situation. I went from Share mode to Domain, and realized it wasn't a good idea. Went back to Share and all was screwed up. I read that Share mode doesn't really work now, especially with Win7, so I went with User mode to get it up and running.
I did not reset it with "Share folder owner" to admin, I tried it with my username, so at least I could have full rights, but no go. I'll repeat the process now with "admin" in the spot for "Share folder owner". Share folder Group i'll put "users". Everything else is set default to "Read/write" Check the "Set ownership and permission for existing files...blah blah".
Then click apply. Just curious, but I'm guessing the "admin" account is a built in one that is hidden from the user list? I just did it and am waiting on a pop up to say finished, am I supposed to get one?
Doesn't appear to have worked. When I go into certain folders I need to update, it throws up a "You need permission to perform this action". This is when trying to create a simple new .txt file for testing. Ug! - james_k_pAspirantSuccess! It finally came back with a 'message from webpage' that said "Share contents ownership and permissions changed to match the share".
This never happened yesterday and I am now able to change and write new content to the directories. Thank goodness. Happy weekend everyone! - vandermerweMasterYou should get confirmation that ownership and permissions have been changed.
There are many reports on the forum of permissions problems with windows 7, I have had a brief look. There are a few suggestions but seemingly each problem is unique and therefore no single solution. Have you had a look.
Have you tried using a vista or xp PC to perform he same functions?
In the share specific permissions settings have you ticked the "automatically set permissions......" box. If so try unticking it and then resetting permissions in the advanced settings.
One more thing, there are some problems with share owner and group settings with the latest firmware for the NV+ ( v1) . You need to revert to 4.1.8 or move to the latest beta version if you haven't already
Edit: I have just seen your most recent message (after I posted the above)
