RN104 Issues
I got my RN104 & installed 2 X 3TB Reds. I powered up & it took about 16 hours to resync. I fully understand but I want separate volumes & RAID 0. I can't get RAIDar to find the NAS. I have the RN104 plugged directly to my PC with the supplied cable.
The RN104 & my PC are in the same subnet that is 169.254. So why can't RAIDar find the RN104?
I have managed via chrome to login with admin & change my password. I did a factory restore, & tried to delete the volume, but the RN104 has started to resync again! Another 16 hours before I can have another go at deleting the volume & then set the individual drives as RAID 0!
Did I do something wrong? Advise would be very much appreciated.
Cheers

- vandermerweMasterWhen you initially set up the NAS it will try to obtain an IP address from a dhcp server. Your setup doesn't allow it to do this so it will default to an IP address of 192.168.168.168. The subnet you have given is unusual. It should probably be 255.255.255.0
What are the IP addresses of your PC and the 104?
As for the raid format , you need to switch off xraid, then delete the volume, then you should be able to create a new volume in the raid format you want. You do not need to wait for the resync to finish before deleting a volume or switching from xraid. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI suspect stevedeet is meaning to say his address range is 169.254.x.x, not his subnet mask. Windows clients fail over to these addresses when DHCP fails (similar to the 192.168.168.168 failover of the ReadyNAS), so it is a bit unusual to use this range for private addresses.
However, stevedeet is connecting to the NAS via Chrome. So DHCP does seem to be working. - stevedeetAspirantThanks for your feedback. I have now managed to set up 2 separate volumes. I have noticed the RN104 has changed its IP address.
The RN104 is: 169.254.64.198 subnet: 255.255.0.0
The PC is: 169.254.106.156 Subnet: 255.255.0.0
I can't find the RN104 on the network. I can only login via Chrome to the admin page. - stevedeetAspirantHaving logged off both NAS & PC & logged back on, I can now see the NAS on the network. I wanted both volumes to be encrypted but when I tried having created the volume, it couldn't find the USB stick I had plugged in to store the key. Any ideas?
Having now found the NAS on the network, I want to password protect both volumes, any ideas?
Many thanks again for the support. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou password protect shares, not volumes.
- xeltrosApprenticeThe 169.254 address is indeed a specific IP range that is reserved for APIPA addresses (cf : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_ ... Addressing)
A mask in 169.254.0.0 is indeed impossible as mask since 169 gives 10101001 in binary and masks stop at the first "0" in the binary code so the closest one would be 128.0.0.0 here, which by the way is not allowed for any kind of private address to my knowing.
You don't need RAIDar to configure the RN104, this can be done via the web interface.
As said by stephen, volumes are not available through network by default. You have to create shares for which you will set rights. - stevedeetAspirantThanks again for the feedback. I'll have a play with shares tomorrow after work!
- stevedeetAspirantNow realize the reason why the RN104 in setting encryption can't find the USB stick! Daft or what, I had it plugged in the PC & not the RN104!!
