RN3130 no boot menu

Hi,

After a few months of using RN-3130 I got such a message:

V+12 voltage in enclosure Internal is out of spec. (18.35 V).

First - I moved two disks to the other NAS (RN-212) and they work properly.

Second - I checked PS and it has all voltages ok. I also used another PS from a PC and NAS behaves in the same way. So the PS is not a problem here.

Third - I was trying to enter the boot menu and even connect USB stick to upload a new soft.

Nothing works. After switching on the fans start working, the network LED blinks once and that is all. Power LED is always off. Only green led from the second HDD is on all the time.

Could you suggest what I can do. Is it dead? If so where can I buy the mother board?

  • You seem to have skipped something here.  You went from a working system with one set of drives but a warning message, to a working unit with drives from another ReadyNAS (with no indication of whether or not you got the same error) to a non-working system.  I suppose it could be from your third step (which was a really bad idea, as it would have nothing to do with that reported error and can create new problems), but you've not given enough detail as to what you did, and thus what the consequence might have been.  It may be that the problem progressed to a point that the motherboard doesn't work, but I think that's a premature conclusion.

First of all, there is no way the voltage is actually at 18.35V, which you also confirmed.  It would fry your drives and probably more.  So either the hardware that monitors that voltage has gone bad (which would be an inconvenience, but not a catastrophe) or the configuration file that sets the scaling for the monitor has been corrupted.  Unfortunately, you now have to try to get your system back up and running before we can help you determine which it is.

Netgear does not sell parts and, unlike some earlier rack-mount models, the OS6 native systems like the 3100 aren't typically just OEMed from another vendor from whom parts are available (though I do not know specifically about the 3100).

Sandshark The 3100 (RNRP4000) was a RAIDiator-x86 unit. This should not be confused with the 3130 which shipped with OS6.

I mistyped "3100" when I meant "3130".  The OP did ask about the 3130, to which my response applies.

The 3100 is a customized SuperMicro system.  The 3130 is not.  While it appears to be manufactured for Netgear by Chenbro, all of that line I have ever seen are unique Netgear designs and only Chenbro chassis parts (including caddies) can be substituted.

Thank you very much for your response.

I will try to explain it more precisely.

After I got a warning message there was not any access to NAS even the power led was on and LAN led was blinking, fans were working and all disks were marked green.

I even couldn't shut it down. After force restart the power led is off. That was unusual so I removed the most important disks.

      my first step.

I had very important data on my disks (slot 1 and 2, RAID1, volume name 'data') so I wanted to know if they suvived. Hopefully after moving these disks to RN212 they started working without any problems, warnings etc.

Because I didn't want to use disks with critical data in a faulty device I moved disks from slots 3 and 4 to slot 1 and 2 I decided to restore NAS to factory default but unsuccessfully.

I did it before a few months earlier and it worked then.

      I used this manual:
      https://kb.netgear.com/27204/How-do-I-access-the-boot-menu-on-my-ReadyNAS-2304-3130-or-3138-storage-system

So RN3130 has definitely a hardware problem.

OK, but what, exactly, did you do between when the unit was working other than reporting a bad +12V and when it stopped working?  When you were "trying to enter the boot menu and even connect USB stick to upload a new soft."

The 3130 does have a 5 year warranty.  If you are still in that window, you should contact Netgear support.
