RN31400 max capacity
Hi!
WD RED 6 TB is on the hardware compatibility list, but according to specs the maximum capacity is 16 TB. If you install 3 X 6 TB with raid 5, how much actual space do you get, and what happens if you later add a 4:th disk?
I find this a bit confusing, and would greatly appreciate if some one can help me out.
Kind regards
Magnus J

- AfioraiAspirantThe specs documentation is in need of updating.
I would hazard a guess and say that in your configuration, you would get just under 12 TB. - MrOrcAspirantThank you for your reply.
So the chance is that the actual max capacity is not 16 but 24 TB? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt should handle 4x6TB drives. In jbod, that would be 24 TB, in RAID-5, it would end up 18 TB.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI think you mean 18TB in RAID-5. Of course disk manufacturers use 1TB = 1000^4 Bytes, whereas the NAS uses 1TB = 1024^4 Bytes. Different measurements, same amount of space. So the actual volume capacity will be a little over 16TB.
The specs were written well before 6TB drives were made available, were tested and added to the compatibility list. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Yes, typed it wrong. I just edited it.mdgm wrote: I think you mean 18TB in RAID-5.
Well, ~16 TiB really. But of course Microsoft and others insist on labeling it TB.mdgm wrote: Of course disk manufacturers use 1TB = 1000^4 Bytes, whereas the NAS uses 1TB = 1024^4 Bytes.
