RND4000-100eus - no shares available and admin page not available

Hi all

I'm new here and fairly new to the world of NAS. Bought this NAS from a collegue and it has been working fine for a year now. The other day I couldn’t access the shares on the NAS from my PC so logged into the admin page and re-booted the device. All well again. So 2 days later that same thing happened again only this time the admin page was not available (as if the http server wasn’t running on the device). Did a port scan on it and no port 80 or 443 was listening.

All I could do was hold the power switch until it powered off. After power on it was all good again. again later no access to shares this time from the admin screen I disabled CIFS and re-enabled this brought the shares back OK - for a while. Next time the admin page was no longer available.

Now I boot the device it all looks ok from the front screen and RAIDar says it’s all healthy but I have no access to me shares and the admin page will not load.

Have googled around and found comment that he web server stops and suggestion taking out the network cable for a while and re-attaching start the service again but no luck with that. Have searched around this forum and found various comments but none seem to be quite the same.

NAS is living in a Windows environment but I have access to Linux machines if tools on this platform are easier/better

Where do I go from here?

I do have data on the disks that I don’t want to lose – of course

Many thanks in advance for any comments

Regards

Do you know if remote ssh was enabled on the NAS?

One possibility that fits the symptoms is a filling OS partition.  Tech Support can fix it easily - but they will charge (US per incident support is $75, pricing varies in other countries).  But they won't support used equipment - so your colleague would need to open the support request on your behalf.

      Thanks for reply StephenB

SSH was  not enabled as far as I remember and a port scan does not show port 22 available.

Have now tried having it re-install its OS by holding the power switch with re-set button pressed but this caused a message saying the os was bad after a re-boot.

next was to re-install the os from a USB which I have done and now with the disks back in it boots - RAIDar says it’s OK and the activity light is flashing (hopefully just a re-sync) but no shares or Admin page still.

Hoping that after the sync finishes (10 hours I think) it might allow access again – does re-sync prevent access to admin page?

      Regards

I don't think what you did will fix a filling OS partition, unless you accidently did a factory reset (which will cost your data).  Hopefully I'm wrong.

Do you have RAIDar installed on a PC?  It will often provide the status even when the admin ui is non-reponsive.

Generally I like the old version (4.3.8) with the old NAS - that is here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ReadyNAS/RAIDar_Win_4_3_8.exe
