- reelmccoyAspirantThanks, Han. I'll go ahead and return these then.
BTW - Love the Pro!!! - luriumAspirantIm getting 30mb/sec + from and too my readynas pro with my 4x1,5 tb seagate disks with write cache turned off. So personally i will keep my disks until new firmware comes out.
It HAS to come a fix, these disk also fails when only single disk on ANY system. There are even posts at the seagate message board!
This shows that all linux users have these write cache problems.

Hi there.
I am suffering from the same problem, constant freezes (of up to 30 seconds) on the 1.5TB drives.
Model Number: ST31500341AS
Firmware Revision: SD17
And the problem is not just under Linux, its in Vista too.
I have tried the drive in the following configurations and they all exhibit the freezing problem:
Motheboard on-board SATA controller, non-raid
PCI-Express SATA controller, non-raid and raid
Swapping SATA cables
Swapping Power supplies
Running on Linux Ubuntu 2.6.24
Running on Vista 64 Bit Home Premium
The problem exhibits itself really quickly while watching recorded TV shows.
On Linux I can get red of the problem by disabling write cache on the drive, on Vista I don't know how to fix it.
EDIT: This seems to be a much bigger problem, there are reports of problems with this drive in Macs, PC's, NAS devices, you name it:
Mac User Thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=571843
Ubuntu Users Thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=933053

So lets hope this gets resolved soon! - Han_SoloTutorlurium,
Thanks for the info on this. - gregb1Aspirantmy time is running out and I really need to decide my next step so please give me the best Jedi guess...
I just upgraded to 4 - 1.5 seagates and have 1 week left before I will not be able to return them; I see 2 options here
1) return the 1.5's for 1gb drives - do the swap out and forget about the delay issues on the 1.5's
2) keep the 1.5's in hope a fix is forthcoming.
i tested with movies and mp3's a bit over the weekend and did not experience the documented issues but I am concerned that it is a matter of time before this problem surfaces and I may be out of time at that point. - luriumAspirantTo my surprise i found out that many users have turned off journaling and left write cache on.
A bit nasty if you dont use UPS but i guess its a good fix to use until a firmware update from seagate comes.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductRe ... 6822148337"-issue with Seagate firmware on all drives to date in the 1.5GB capacity. Drives under OS X that are formatted as "Mac OS X Extended Journaled" will freeze every 15-20 minutes for about 10 seconds. The solution is to format the drive as "Mac OS X Extended" without Journaling."
So im gonna turn on write cache and turn of journaling until a firmware update fixes this problem once and for all. - rstoneAspirant

Well considering how many people on newegg are complaining about DOA drives and drive errors and failures, I'd be extremely cautious before purchasing these drives. Personally, I'm going to let my PRO sit, unused, until they resolve this issue. My NV+ is more than capable of holding me over until this is resolved. However, if you don't have a 2nd NAS, I'd suggest either not using the PRO until the issue is resolved or eat the cost and purchase 1gig drives and over time replace them with 1.5 or larger as your budget affords you. - reelmccoyAspirantI'll tell you what. Seagate's support doesn't give me warm fuzzies. Between the response I received from their support and those on Seagate's forums, it's not looking promising right now. I really hope Netgear has their ears and their minds working in the right places.
- luriumAspirantWell a senior tech at seagate gave me the option of replacement, getting the same problem drives again :)
This was the final offer after 5-6 email back and forth.

Hello Thomas,
Unfortunately there is not much you can do short of replacing the drive. I can't say however that will have any effect but we have no options at this point since you are running the latest firmware.
You can get the replaced by either going online through this link and returning drive as guest http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/suppor ... assistance
or you can call Warranty Support at 1.800.SEAGATE Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 10 PM EST.

Keep in mind, you will get a refurb... I know.. It stinks... But unless you're able to make some other special arrangement (good luck with that), that's the way it is. - luriumAspirantWell i have choosen to keep my 1,5tb drives cause its 100% stable with write cache off and write speed are still reasonable.
Meaning i get 40-50mb/sec write to my nas from vista with only 4x 1,5tb seagate drives.
